In a shocking move, the Trump administration (?) is attempting to unmask political critics on Twitter:

Twitter Inc. sued the Trump administration to bar it from forcing the company to identify a user who has tweeted criticisms of the Homeland Security Department.

...

The company says in the lawsuit filed Thursday in San Francisco federal court that the government failed to demonstrate that users have committed a crime to prompt the release of their names.

From the article, it sounds like the Homeland Security Department and the US Customs and Border Protection agencies are the ones pursing the tweeters identity- i'm not sure if it's fair to conflate that with the Trump administration.

This issue hits close to home. Speech is protected in this country, we should not let this administration abandon freedom of speech for the sake of power.

I always find it funny when Twitter bans or "outs" Conservative people, yet they protect the "free speech" of Jihadists and racists on the left. :doh

Do you have any examples of twitter violating their privacy policy in this manner?

Or are you just here to muddy the waters out of unacknowledged guilt or something?

How do you manage to wander off topic in the second post? Are you just sharing a random thought that drifted into your noggin?

Hard to tell if he thinks the critic is a 'Conservative people', a racist or a Jihadist. Or if it even has anything at all to do with the OP.
Strange use of capital letters, too.

Protected speech is not absolute.

Don't get used to this, but I agree with you here. It appears the person broke no laws, and may just be a whistle blower that the government wants to punish. The court made the correct decision.

Milo comes to the top of my mind. He was banned from Twitter due to Liberal crying, yet Twitter allows Jihadists to post literal murders as well as spew their hatred freely.

Milo should not have been banned, but Twitter is not the government, is a private group with membership required to post, and the 1st Amendment does not restrict them from choosing their own members, however, that and your other posts have nothing to do with this particular case, OP article, or thread. IMHO that is.

We should not allow any administration abandon free speech for power, but we have and continue to.

A large portion of the population supported previous administrations acquiring the power to piss all over the constitution. Shouting down any opposition as unpatriotic racist or sexist.

I'm not shocked.

True. However, the target of the request does not seem to have violated any laws, therefore the Trump administration has no basis to demand that Twitter identify the user.

This isn't about banning a user from twitter. It is about revealing the identity of an anonymous user because their speech challenges immigration policy.

If the US government wants private information, it should acquire a warrant.

Twitter also should stop with the lie that they promote open and non controlled speech. They ban people that they don't agree with, while letting actual criminals post their garbage freely. I don't care who Twitter allows on their system. But they should be honest about their censorship.

I never said it was. I just find it funny that Twitter suddenly cares about "free speech" in this situation.

You agree with the article, then, that the department of homeland security and the US customs and border protection agencies qualify as representatives of the Trump administration in this respect?

I'm unclear if this request is tied to President Trump himself; if it did, then i think this is a pretty big deal.

I consider that outside the scope of this thread.

They're a private organization. They can do whatever they want. It's actually that simple.

I didn't say they couldn't. Learn to read.
