PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is world-renowned for its fetal surgery in which an operation is performed on a baby still inside the womb.

Recently, in yet another historic procedure, CHOP doctors undertook a risky and delicate operation on a tiny fetal heart.

Baby in the Womb? Is that what it is? It’s not an obligate parasite or a lump of cells?

Yes, there are still many who do not consider a baby with a beating heart to be just a disposable inconvenience.

So much work to save a child with a medical problem, against so much effort to prevent a healthy child from going full term.

One shows the heights to which we can aspire as a people.

The other shows how low humanity can stoop.

Personally.

And this is just me, instead of using such a story to score the lowest of the lowest disgusting political point.

I would prefer to see this as absolutely amazing news.

One has to feel such joy for the family, I really hope things go well from here.

But for the professionalism, ingenuity and incredible skill that must have gone into performing such an operation for all involved, truly a marvelous demonstration of modern medicine at work.

Did it help a human life in the womb?

yes or no

That’s onehelluvalotta effort for some THING that’s not a human life

I am in awe of the skill of those surgeons.

The difference between a situation like this and a pregnancy that ends in abortion is one woman wants to bring her pregnancy to term and another doesn't. Assuming this surgery was done in the second semester before the brain was sufficiently formed to produce a mind, I wouldn't consider the fetus a person, legally or morally. But that doesn't mean it is worthless to the woman. She wants a child. She has put her body through a lot getting to that point. She wants to keep allowing it to develope to the point it is a person.

And as for the emotional aspect, yes, most pregnant women and their partners call the embryos children and love them, even in the early stages. It is normal, part of the bonding process, and likely a byproduct of evolution that prospective parents anthropomorphize the embryo/fetus. I did it too. But if you aren't going to carry the pregnancy to term then there is no reason to start that bonding process.
