All this Russian allegation talk, makes me wonder. If Joseph McCarthy anti-commie and anti-Russian senator in the 1950s were to travel through time into the future, he would say he was right about Russia and probably communists too. I don't know how he'd feel about Trump tho.

I am sure there was just enough truth in what McCarthy alleged that it struck a chord. Otherwise it would not have sold so well.

Of course he was right. Just look at the Democrat Party today. Your head guy is an unapologetic commie.....er....." Democratic Socialist".

And Trump is a Russian Stooge! Man the guy had real foresight and the US's political future.

Not really. It only struck a cord because this was during the Second Red Scare.

Yes yes. I realize that's what your issued talking points would have you believe, but there is simply no evidence to support it.

No, there actually were communists in the government. They are now in charge of the Democrat Party.

Possibly he was necessary to lay the foundation for a 50 years struggle and effort expensive in human costs and treasure. That much persistence is no mean undertaking in a democratic society.

Are we looking at a similar existential effort now?

:lamo You ****ing kidding me?

Joe McCarthy was censured by the U.S. Senate.

Are you kidding me? McCarthy would have LOVED Trump.

Why you ask?

Because they both had a VERY deep relation with the man behind the men....Roy Cohn.

Yep. One of the most influential man in Trump's life, besides Daddy -- was Roy Cohn, his stead-fast lawyer, his dear friend and and by every standard, his mentor-- Cohn was Joe McCarthy's right hand man.

-- Roy Cohn, who helped to destroy thousands of lives -- was a Jewish anti-Semite,

and led what was known as the "lavender scare" witch hunt which led to brutal mass firings of homosexuals.

And he was gay.

And in the end, when Cohn was near death from HIV/AIDS and staying at one of Trump's hotels, he kicked Cohn out.....and sent a hotel bill to Cohn.

What an interesting thread!

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction ...

Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin was an intelligent, tireless, and very brave patriot. He is a personal hero of mine. McCarthy grew up on a farm, so poor he had to leave high school to help with the work there. He then went back, graduated, and after that graduated from college and from Marquette Law School. He opened a law office and went on to become the youngest state court judge in Wisconsin's history. Although he was in his thirties and married when the U.S. entered World War Two and could have avoided service, McCarthy joined the Marine Corps and served in the Pacific.

Joe McCarthy won a surprise victory in a Senate race and went to Washington in 1948. He was an Irish Catholic who liked hunting and playing poker over a few drinks, cared little about how he dressed, had no pretenses, and by all accounts was one hell of a nice guy--all the more so to "little people" like taxi drivers, bellhops, and receptionists.

A young Bobby Kennedy was McCarthy's second-ranking research lawyer, and he had great respect for him. So did his brother, the strongly anti-Communist Senator who was to become President. And although McCarthy made some blunders, information which started to come to light four decades after his untimely death at age 47 has largely vindicated him. It shows that quite a few federal agencies had been penetrated by a vast network of Communist operatives and sympathizers, some of them outright agents reporting to Stalin.

I strongly recommend "Blacklisted by History," Stanton Evans' superb, extensively documented book on McCarthy's career. It is long and complex, but fascinating. It draws on tens of thousand of pages of previously undiscovered FBI files, as well as the Venona Cables, the decrypts of thirty years' worth of intercepted Soviet cable messages the U.S. published in the 1990's.

Joe McCarthy was wrong about some things, but the main thrust of his claim that the government was riddled with Communists working against U.S. interests was true.

McCarthy was wrong in the 1950s and will be wrong forever. His witch hunts ruined lives and initiated bad policy.

And how no conservatives seem to want to talk about the fact that he was anti-Russian.. Hmmm.
Well, thats muddying things a bit, McCarthy was anti commie, whereas I would suspect he would be fine with Putin turning Russia into a kleptocracy......and we all know that the Orangatan LUVS and admires Putin's ways.

His rhetoric was during the cold war, and was used as a means to harm opposition more than protect the country. Prior to the end of ww2, both socialism and it's mentally retarded stepbrother fascism were popular movements in america, so much so that the media went out of it's way to hide all of stalins atrocities to paint russia as a saint.

Post ww2 the soviet union becomes a superpower, and the cold war begins. Even during the cold war, the soviet union and america had alot in common in interests, but their ideology and shared lust for supremecy made them enemies. But the actual calling someone a russian supporter or accusing them of being a comunist was nothing more than attempting to shut down any discussion that was not in lockstep with govt opinion, in a way fascism.

But calling mccarthy right? Mccarthy was by many definitions a fascist, and what fascism actually stands for. I can not believe people like to call trump or anyone else a fascist while doing the textbook strategy for fascism, maybe people need to look in a mirror sometimes.

Yeah something tells me he might look the other way with Trump as so many others have, but it depends if he was truly anti-Russian, or just anti-communist and didn't really care about Russia, just that it was communist.

Um, McCarthy was going after "commies" in the US, not Russians. Cohn was a prosecutor in the Rosenberg case, it was all about Soviets/Communists, it was ideology, not ethnicity.

To answer the thread title: no, McCarthy was not right.

He popularized himself by dishonestly destroying innocent people through sham investigations.

Meanwhile, the current scandal only became scandalous when the Trump admin tried to quash the possibility of investigation, and both Sessions/Flynn lied about Russia contacts. (No less, while Trump himself peddled any number of conspiracy theories).

Damn! Now you guys are dragginh Joe McCarthy out of the grave to support your argument? :lamo

It was trump who directly dragged McCarthy out of the grave to smear Obama with his blatant irrational lies on wire tapping .
