The story says that this information was gathered by US counterintelligence, and of course it would have been done by wiretapping Trump Tower, which is where Trump's campaign was located. No doubt it was political operatives who leaked this information to the Times. Leakers usually turn out to be administration lawyers. It's not clear who ordered this wiretapping, but I believe Obama was President at the time. It was his administration.

The Times has since gone back and edited that story in an Orwellian manner trying to undermine Trump's claim that Trump Tower was wiretapped. Compare https://t.co/hlOvWPG1KQ They either are stupid or think we are.

Or it could have been by wiretapping Russians who the aids talked to. Nice try, too bad it fails.

I cant imagine why any intelligence agency would have been concerned over the dealings of Comrade Manafort - whose office just happened to be located in Trump Tower.......:2wave:

No, it doesn't, and never did.

The US runs surveillance on Russian officials and Russian intelligence agents. If a Trump staffer calls a Russian intelligence agent, then guess what? They get caught on surveillance, and the people running the investigation learn that Trump campaign staffers are talking to Russian officials and intelligence agents.

According to the leak, this led to investigations of Trump staffers.

Nothing in the article supports Trump's false claims in these matters.

But thanks for keeping the story alive. :peace

You have quite an expansive view of "Orwellian". Your post does not show that the story was changed one iota from the initial front page article, only that a different headline was used when the story ran on an inside page. The choice of "intercepted" conveys the very same meaning as "wiretapped" and is more exact in that wiretaps are passé technology and certainly would not have been used in this instance.

It's quite amazing that anyone would think a President can just call for a Wiretapping without a FISA Judge Approval ... :doh

That would mean not only the President is guilty, it would mean The FISA Court and everyone involved would be guilty ... and they would have to hide all the communication involved.

:doh

They either are stupid or think we are.

I think you've got your pronouns confused.

There's nothing more to this thread anyway, seeing as it was already dismantled in the first few posts.

Question: If John Doe is staying at or working at Trump Tower and he is targeted for wire tapping, does that mean that by extension Donald Trump was targeted for wire tapping? If someone staying at a Hilton hotel is targeted for wire tapping does that mean the Hilton family can accurately say they were wire tapped?

I'm betting that kind of scenario is exactly how this is going to play out.

After taking flak for a week or two of not producing proof that "Obama wiretapped me", Trump will try to claim that he was actually referring to someone connected to him getting picked up when they happened to call someone else who was being wiretapped, or are caught saying things on a bug aimed at someone else. (After all, Conway has instructed us not to listen to the words he says, but what it is in his heart). He will then attack the left for being hysterical. Within one hour, there will be ten DP threads citing the exchange as proof that the left is hysterical and Trump just "got" them with a genius maneuver.

Hopefully I'm wrong, but patterns have a way of staying patterns.

This is what Trump did when confronted about making the false claim about having the largest EC win since Reagan. He tried to justify it by saying that he was just echoing what somebody had told him or written down.

You wish.

The Times implies that Trump's aids were the target of the wiretapping. In any case, it needs an investigation.

I think in a pre 9/11 Patriot Act society you are correct. However post 9/11 and thanks to the liberties the PA gives to law in regards to spying, Or "DATA COLLECTION" as they prefer to be called, that no longer seems the case. Now if someone was wanting to wire tap John they would collect all communications from Trump Tower and pinky swear to only look for John's stuff. It wouldn't be the first time the Obama administration got caught listening in on people.

I find Trump making it up and at least someone really close to if not Obama himself listening to recorded conversations Trump had that had no basis to be recorded. (Not buying that Obama personally ordered Trump tapped and listen to his phone calls personally each day)

Why did they change the headline? That's highly significant. And you don't know that the body of the story wasn't changed.

The story is pretty damaging to the Obama administration even in its updated form:

The counterintelligence investigation centers at least in part on the business dealings that some of the president-elect’s past and present advisers have had with Russia. Mr. Manafort has done business in Ukraine and Russia. Some of his contacts there were under surveillance by the National Security Agency for suspected links to Russia’s Federal Security Service, one of the officials said.

Mr. Manafort is among at least three Trump campaign advisers whose possible links to Russia are under scrutiny

That's pretty straightforward. Trump's aides were the target of the investigation, not just people who happened to be talking to Russians who were targeted.

That this information was leaked to the press is highly illegal.

Sorry, but that's pretty ridiculous.

The text of the Times story is clear: Trump's aides were the targets of the investigation:
