I'm not a fan of Trump by any stretch but the man lives in Florida and works in Washington. We - the taxpayers through our elected representatives - demand that he travel with a very expensive escort. He has every right to go home as often as he likes - like any other person who works away from home (many employers foot the bill work weekend travel home for employees they send away on assignments). If we don't want to pick up the cost we should change the rules.

Edit: How was the number calculated. It seems very high to me given what I know about 747 operating costs.

perhaps, but his home is Washington. And remember everytime he goes "Home" he actually financially benefits from Government renting and paying marked up prices Secret Service and other staffers have to rent room and floors from Him....How convenient for him that he is home sick so often.

Isn't that by definition a ponzi scheme?

More like "The fleecing of America...............lol
Except is really isn't funny.

There was all sorts of rage coming from many sectors of the right over Obama's vacations and security. Those sectors are silent as Trump ramps up his own security costs, while Melania's decision to stay in NY may cost half a billion dollars over the term.

Surely you are not implying a little hypocrisy here and there.......lol

How dare you sir, how .... dare .... you!

Yes.

It really is astounding the way things flip around. I started participating in online debate boards around 2004. I say it in 2008 and now 2016.

It seems a bit disingenuous to make a speech touting budget issues, and then fly to Florida virtually every weekend. Would it not resonate better if he set the example of fiscal responsibility?

In addition, I think there is a certain expectation that when you are elected Potus, the WH thus becomes your home.

While I agree with you that it's probably not a good idea to give people ammunition when he's trying to cut costs I don't see where he has much choice. The man could easily afford to fly himself home every week on his own jet but our laws won't let him.
I know that there's an expectation that the WH becomes your home but where do you draw the line. Presidents always go back to their private homes while in office - some more than others.

He isn't occupying just one "home away from home", but TWO. Maybe he could eliminate one?

He resides in New York. He has a mansion and golf resorts in Florida. He has golf resorts all over the world, and he travels to them all.

Secret Service has taken up an entire floor of Trump Tower, the gilded castle in NY (his residence)....and we the taxpayers have to pay for that BECAUSE THEY REFUSE TO LIVE IN THE WHITE HOUSE. Is the Trump org. making a profit on that?

Yes, we protect him. But there should be limits. He should be required to reside at the W.H. during his tenure, with his family, with OCCASIONAL trips to one homestead, and occasional vacations to golf.

This is ridiculous and hypocritical of Trump, Republicans, and Trumpers, who say they care about taxes, the deficit, and government spending.

We're in a unique situation with Trump. No President has ever been this wealthy - even if we discount his own statements of wealth he is still the richest man to ever be President. Morever wealthy Presidents of the past largely traveled without escort - Abraham Lincoln for example had 1 bodyguard - and for relatively short distances given the size of the country at the time. Nor did they need all the technology, and staff that comes with it, that a modern President needs to do his job.

This is all to say that we are in largely uncharted territory here that we may or may not ever wander into again any time soon. Making rules for one off situations is usually counter productive. The best way to deal with this situation, like most others with elected officials, is to let the voters decide. If enough people feel as you do next time around he will not be re-elected.

It is simply mind boggling the lengths that folks will go to defend their political "heroes" and label those who may disagree with them as the "enemy".

If Trump had run as a Democrat, the Conservatives would have ripped him apart...............:) Now, they illogically defend him at every opportunity. Simply amazing:lamo

I don't know that it's convenient. Trump was pretty wild in his younger days but my understanding is that he's become much more of a home-body as he's gotten older. So I don't know that he's trying to fleece the taxpayers as much as just wanting to sleep in (one of) his own beds at night. That doesn't change the financial picture but I, for one, am not going to assume this is motivated by trying to increase occupancy.

It does seem as though Trump isn't as widely social as his predecessors who used to take date nights in New York periodically. More manufactured outrage.
