I heard a GOP member of the legislature say that we spend as much on the military as the other top 8 spending nation do together. He was suggesting but not saying that he didn't agree with Trump's proposal to increase military spending A LOT. So how much is enough and do we already spend too much on the military. And don't think I am anti-military. I come from a military family and have spent time in the miitary myself.

It's a tough balance that needs to be struck.

There is the obvious self-defense and offensive capabilities to consider.

The U.S.defense industry is very large and employs many millions of people in uniform and out.

Research is inherently risky. The only guarantee is that when a technological edge presents itself, it's best to be first in line.

Myself, I support a large military, but I think that we also need to re-prioritize a bit, to avoid waste (of which there is a LOT) and maximize the advantages (all of the above.)
