Will only get worse. Already it is a pain in the ass to go to the US, and the more and more stories that come out about people being denied entry because they have the wrong religion, wrong name, happen to be born 40+ years ago in a "bad country" or visited a "bad country" once... the more will say, why bother the effort. Only thing that might help is Norwegian Airlines having cheap ass flights to the US soon, but even that seems to be doomed thanks to Trump and his allies.

So where will they go? Paris?

To many stories of people being refused entry at the last moment will cause people not to book flights or create the plans to go in the first place.

The thing to watch at least for Australia and Canada regarding tourism will be if Chinese nationals start getting refused for entry into the US, then a nice boost to tourism to Canada and Australia should take place

So where will they go? Paris?

Would you risk the cost of airfare and other travel related expenses only to be refused entry at the airport in the US even if you had the appropriate paperwork to get entry?

So where will they go? Paris?

Considering the Eu has pledged co2 reductions that would preclude people's flying about in large numbers......

So where will they go? Paris?

Some sure. Bookings are up at Paris hotels last I heard.

But elsewhere around the world, where it is not as big a problem to go to.

Now I aint saying that tourism will dry up, far from it. The US will remain in the top 5 of tourism destinations (atm nr 2), however there will be a bleed due to the bad PR that entering the US is getting. Now this bleed might manifest it self as a slower than expected growth or if it really goes bad, as a negative growth. Do I think there will be negative growth? No, but less growth than previous.. most likely.

Lets look at where people come from..

Nr. 1 is Canada, with 20+% of all tourists (2014) came from the northern neighbors.
Nr. 2 is Mexico.. well there is a problem, even you have to admit that. That is like 16% of tourists.
Nr. 3 is UK... that might pick up depending on Brexit, but it might also collapse as going to the US is relatively more expensive than say Spain. About 4%.
Nr. 4 is Japan.. probably wont be effected, unless the dear leader pisses off Japan.
Nr. 5 is Brazil .. yea this one was a bit of an eye opener.
Nr. 6 is China... now it is only 2% or so, but it is the fastest growing until now, and well with the way Trump is dealing with China at the moment, then..

Point is, the more Trump pisses off countries the more tourism can be hurt. And since 15%+ of all tourism into the US, comes from Mexico, then there is almost no doubt that it will cause problems for the tourist numbers.

Sadly happens way too often. Most times they are stopped before boarding though, but the plane ticket and other expenses are wasted money.

So much for jobs. I bet this buffoon loses two for everyone he tweets about bringing back.

Let's see. He's been in the orfice of his sphincter for a month. So $185M x 12 mo = $2.22B/yr

MAGA my ass.

Global Tourism Takes Massive Hit After Spike in Terror Attacks - NBC News

Right. So the 7 countries President Trump wanted to apply a temporary hold on travel from are responsible for $185 million in travel revenue.

Do you guys actually think this stuff is going to register outside the bubble content has already been created to attract?

It's not all that great of a place to visit either. Give me Cabo over South Beach any day. Cheaper, better beaches, fewer people. What's not to like?

It's more than just the 7 countries. People know when they aren't really wanted. Why travel to a country where some dumbass redneck in a Trump hat might take exception to your accent and put a cap in your ass? F that. People will just fly to Thailand or Australia.

The teams can try to sell this message, but IMO, the only takers will be those who are already in the corral.

Numbers are down. That's all the proof I need.

But, your claim that tourism in the US is down due to terrorism is probably true though---terrorism as in Rednecks gone wild. That **** is on the upswing, thanks to Donald Blowhard.

I would disagree there. You have to remember, the longer people travel the more cultural things they want. If Europeans want a beach, then it aint LA or Hawaii they go to, it is Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. Simply cheaper.

No, if people go to the US, it is to see a different culture they only see on TV. Now this could be Thailand or China, or India.. same deal. They go to LA for Hollywood, Disneyland, and so on and so on. They go to Las Vegas for gambling and so on. There is plenty of things I personally would want to see and do in the US, but there is a difference between doing that, and taking on the yearly "lets go to the beach or hot place for some relaxation". Going to the US is not relaxing per say... so much to do and see. Sitting on a beach chair in Spain/Italy/Portugal/Greece is relaxing.

Basically it is for "non Canadians" different type of tourists that go to the US. I mean, Mexicans are the second biggest tourist group.. why the hell would they want to go to the US? Not for the beaches! So it must be something else no? You can understand the Canadians though :), they are the Northern Europeans of European tourism :).. going south for the warm weather and beaches.

LOL

I'm sure the litter appreciates the whistles.

Good point. I live here. So, I am totally unimpressed with most things US. If I want to spend time in the mountains, I do not think US mountains--I lean Northern Italy or (I wish) the Himalaya. If I want beaches, I do not think US beaches--I think Mexico or (I wish) the French Rivera. If I think gambling, I do not think Vegas--I think Monaco....etc.

Now, if someone wants traffic jams, over priced hotels and restaurants along with lots of fat and obnoxious people at every turn, I would say go to Disneyworld, LA, DC or NYC. :)

Cabo does nothing for me, not an ounce of any culture. I'll take Costa Rica, beaches and jungles and volcanos, etc.

Exactly. If we in Europe want overpriced hotels and obnoxious people, then we head to Paris or London :)

US Tourism Slump
...make America great again?? It seems as if the world around USA starts regarding USA as the opposite of "Great" after the Trump take-over.

The only people believing that Trump will make America Great Again are those who have their heads so far up his butt they wouldn't notice if he pulled it off without him telling them anyway.

Actually something similar has happened to Russia. I had a chance to take a tour of Moscow, Novgorod, and St. Petersburg back in the summer of 2008. The tourism there was incredible: from the Kremlin and Red Square and top tier Moscow shopping and restaurants, to the historical palaces of the czars, museums, and WWII memorials in St. Petersburg, the place was packed and swarming with tourists from all over the world. I remember the palace of Peter The Great was so packed that it was hard to walk around, and the guide for each tour group had to have the flag of their country held up high so the people would know where their tour guide was. As we were walking around, you could see just about every flag on the planet, and every corner of the palace a different language was being spoken: Japan, China, Brazil and other south American countries, the US and Canada, Italy, Germany, France, UK, Australians, Iranians, all sorts of Arabic countries, Turkey, etc...

I remember on our first afternoon in Russia we came form the airport via shuttle and checked in to this fancy hotel in downtown Moscow. I was totally jet-lagged and exhausted, and so I just plopped down on the bed and started flipping through the TV channels. I don't know much Russian, so I stopped at the English speaking channel RT. It was a very interesting interview with Medvedev. They were talking to him about the possibility of Russia joining the European Union, and Medvedev was very seriously talking about the pros and cons of such a move. I couldn't believe it! Russia joining the EU! And then even more surprisingly, they asked him about Russia joining NATO. My jaw was on the floor. But not Medvedev. He just smiled and said that he believed that might still be a ways off, but that even that would be a possibility that Russia would be willing to entertain in the future. I couldn't believe it.

But my, what a different world we live in now. What a difference a few years makes. I think if such things had come to pass, with Russia as part of the EU and even part of NATO, rather than such a bitter rival, it would have been a win-win for all parties involved, including the US. So what happened? Unbridled nationalism, paranoia, fear, aggressiveness and lack of consideration for the international community, thinking that their glory days were behind them and the way to get it back was through military might, intimidation, bullying, fear, bossiness,... ie, "make Russia Great Again".

The tourism in Russia has taken a bit hit since then. Its reputation as a civilized country in the community of nations in the world is gone. They are just a pariah state now, ostracized by the rest of the world, except perhaps the Syrians and Iranians.

My concern is that this sort of shortsighted aggressiveness, rudeness, selfishness, etc... that led to Russia becoming the pariah state it is now, are the same characteristics which the new administration is putting on the US. The world has traditionally looked to the US as a place which championed human rights, a place they could look to for justice and fairness in a world where such things are in such short supply.... but no more.

So forget the tourism. I think the US has taken an irredeemable hit to its international reputation with the election of someone with such a crass and boorish personality as Trump to be the new face of the country.
