The Guardian said:
The US Senate has confirmed conservative Georgia representative Tom Price as Donald Trump’s health secretary, an appointment that suggests a radical shift in American healthcare over the next four years.

In a late-night vote sharply divided along party lines, the 62-year-old former orthopedic surgeon was confirmed by 52 votes to 47. He will lead an agency with a $1.1tn budget, made up of some of America’s largest public health insurance programs, which he has spent much of his career attacking.

As a congressman he supported privatizing Medicare, America’s public health insurance for the elderly. He proposed turning Medicaid, a program for the poor, into a block grant – a change certain to precipitate cuts.

Hey, I couldn't find a thread on this.

Thoughts?

Maybe someone from Georgia can lend their opinion on Tom Price.

Let me see if I can fill in some gaps for you:
Trump appointed him, so
...he's a harbinger of the end of the world.
...he's working for the Russians
...he's a racist.
...he's a sexist.
...he wants to throw old people and little children into the street.
...he hates Muslims.
...he wants to destroy our economy.

At least this one seems to be qualified, even if I disagree with his politics.

Good. Now the beginning of the end of Boondogglecare can start.

Looks pretty qualified to me.

Hey Governess, :2wave:

Appointing an ultra conservative to the Department of HHS signals "I'm on your team." to conservatives. Any conservatives who were worried Trump was either too moderate or a loose cannon have to see this as a win.

Corruption issues aside... (Tom Price is accused of pushing legislation to grow personal investments).. Liberals won't like this appointment. Tom Price and the health care industry have long been in the throes of a bear hug-like embrace. The health care industry, because of its status as a private business, is profit motivated. So, if they can cut costs, charge outrageous prices and monopolize the industry to their benefit, then they will give massive campaign donations to guys like Tom Price to screw over Americans for them. For state rep bids, Tom Price has taken a career total $3,551,579 from Health Professionals, $822,871 from insurance companies, and $579,825 from the pharma industry.

These massive amounts of money, I argue, compromise someone's integrity. Health and Human Services is in charge of the FDA.. and the pharmaceutical industry has given Price over half a million dollars. What happens when the drug companies need FDA regulations looser to push through drugs or tighter to squeeze competition? Then Pfizer leaves Tom Price a voicemail and says, "Hey, you remember how we helped you with your reelection campaign? We remember. We remember how you're invested in our company too.. so help us push XYZ through and our stock will go up a couple points. Come on, Tommy! Let's make some money!"

During Price's time as a state rep he also voted

On the issues said:
Voted YES on the Ryan Budget: Medicare choice, tax & spending cuts. (Apr 2011)

One of Trump's campaign promises is not to cut Medicare. Price is in favor of privatizing it. This is one of the GOP golden gooses.. to deliver the behemoth, the grand daddy, tax payer funded Medicare to their donors.

These are some of my thoughts on the matter.. libruls unite.

Hey Roadvirus,

Tom Price sponsored an Obamacare replacement called the Empowering Patients Act. It's my understanding that Paul Ryan based his proposals off Price's. Have you taken a look at it?

A few big points are

  • Continuous coverage clause
  • No individual mandate
  • No market regulations preventing insurance from cherry-picking
  • Fixed tax credit at $1,200/year
  • Health savings accounts
  • High risk pools

Tom Price is a shill for the medical establishment. He wins by getting big donations from them and then doing what they want, so you can be sure his healthcare plan will actually be a "healthcare provider" plan. Of course almost all politicians work that way. Here you can see he got 2.3 million for his campaign, his opponent 0 in big donations. Price won with over 60% of the vote, big surprise! Look down through the list and you will see that the big money ALWAYS wins. Way to go Citizens (actually corporations...they are just trying to trick you with the title) United.

At least with Price we'll always be able to tell which direction the administration intends to go on health policy by keeping track of his stock portfolio moves.

Lol....sorry, people have been listening to empty Left wing demagoguery like that for the last 8 years. They've also been dealing with increased out of pocket cost, higher premiums and higher deductibles thanks to a disastrous Healthcare law.

Price is the new HHS because they voted to reject the agenda that sold them a healthcare law on a pack of lies and defended it even as its cost increases disproportionately targeted the Middle Class.

He's a great choice as HHS and he has a huge mess to clean up, a mess made by the Democratic party

So you apparently like the idea that almost all of our politicians are bought and paid for.

As far as healthcare costs wake up! They always have gone up! On the whole they have slowed recently. The ACA costs are higher than they should be because republicans refused to expand medicaid, so we have people going to the emergency room instead of using medicaid. Hospitals then had to raise prices to cover these costs that formerly were paid by the government, but that program is gone. Insurance companies then pass these costs along to the Middle Class. Then they vote to defund certain payments to the insurance companies. All in all an effort raise costs to sabotage the program because it has Obama's name on it. The program works just fine, just ask Massachusetts who has had the same program for far longer. I could never understand why "conservatives" don't like the idea of a mandate to buy insurance, but prefer to have a bunch of freeloaders who get treatment by law but don't pay, especially when the idea of the mandate came from the Heritage foundation.

Price isn't my congressman. But the people of his district like him. He won re-election with 62% of the vote. It interesting to note his district spans into two counties which is heavily Democratic in Fulton and Dekalb along with Cobb. Clinton won the first two counties by a huge margin and Cobb by a few thousand.

He's from north of Atlanta and I'm south of Atlanta. So no personal experience with him. I know Price was very anti-Obamacare, but a lot of physicians around here were and are. I would say for Georgia he isn't that conservative as some of our Representatives are. But that may be because of his district proximity to Atlanta, considered the liberal capital of Georgia. We say down here that there is Atlanta and then there is the real Georgia.

But outside of that, I'm afraid I can't be much help.
