Anger over Centrelink benefits for multiple Muslim wives

Conservative MP Cory Bernardi says the payment of Centrelink spousal benefits to the wives of polygamous Muslim men is political correctness gone mad.



The Daily Telegraph reports today that Centrelink has opted to ignore Islamic polygamy, paying spousal benefits to Muslim families with multiple wives in an effort to save taxpayers’ money.


Former prime minister Tony Abbott reportedly called for action after learning about the issue, only to be told that it would cost more to pay the wives the single parent benefit.


Centrelink said it did not hold data based on polygamous relationships or religion. The Islamic marriages are religious unions that are not registered.


“We are always told the data is not kept. I think that is a convenient excuse,” Senator Bernardi said.


“The lack of will to confront some individuals who seek to apply a different law to themselves means politicians are afraid to speak out.’‘


Tony Abbott’s former chief of staff Peta Credlin confirmed to the The Daily Telegraph that Mr Abbott had demanded action in the last days of his leadership after Centrelink officials confirmed the practice was the talk of their offices in western Sydney.


“The answer I got back was to fix it could cost more. To be honest there was frustration about how difficult overall rorting in this area was to remedy,” she said.


Finance Minister Mathias Cormann dismissed the story, saying the government doesn’t recognise multiple marriages.


“The proposition that somehow the government is authorising polygamy, that is just completely ridiculous,” Senator Cormann told Sky News.

Policy 8 - Investigate welfare payments paid to Muslims who may be in multiple marriages, having multiple children
Polygamy is illegal and in Australia, bigamy (getting married while still legally married) is criminalised. The Marriage Act 1961 (Cth) provides that any person who, while married, goes through a form or ceremony of marriage with any other person is guilty of an offence with a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment [s 94(1)].

Many people who are not Muslim have multiple marriages, divorce, and children from multiple marriages. These people may be entitled to benefits, but these benefits all rely on looking at income and circumstances.

It is up to each individual applicant to Centrelink to provide truthful information, and intentionally failing to do that can amount to Centrelink fraud. Crimes under the Criminal Code such as Obtaining financial advantage [s 135.2(1)], Dishonesty causing a loss [s 135.1(5)] , and Obtaining a financial advantage by deception [s 134.2(1)] have penalties that range from 12 months to 10 years maximum imprisonment and large fines may also apply.

Centrelink fraud is illegal and is not unique to any one group. There is no need to specifically target Muslims to seek out where people are committing fraud. Any suspected fraud should be reported: https://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/contact-us/reporting-fraud

In any event, Sharia law explicitly mandates Muslims to respect the law of the land in which they reside, so Muslims engaging in conduct that is in breach of Australian laws are engaging in un-Islamic conduct.

In the UK, it is illegal to marry more than one person.
Polygamous marriages are only recognised if they took place in countries where they are legal.
That includes Middle Eastern states, Pakistan and Zambia
While there are no official figures, it is believed that there may be as many as 20,000 polygamous marriages in the British Muslim community.
Currently, a husband and his first wife receive up to £114.85 a week in benefits, with subsequent wives able claiming about £40 each.
Under the new universal credit system, which is not expected to be fully introduced until 2021, polygamous marriages will not be recognised at all.
The standard allowance is about £498.89 a month for couples, but single people can claim about £317.83.
That means the husband and his first wife will be able to claim the married couples' allowance and subsequent wives will be able to claim a single person's allowance.
