I was perusing Facebook this morning as I always do. I come across this statement and many of my fellow teachers had shared it and "liked" it. It really, really bothered me.

No, educators aren't the only people who lose sleep over other people's children. Social workers, law enforcement, judges, pediatricians, nurses, day care workers, babysitters, neighbors, grandmas, grandpas, friends -- anyone with a freakin' heart loses sleep over other people's children at times. I don't understand why some of my fellow teachers buy into this weird notion that teachers are the "sainted" ones and everyone else is below them and don't care as much.

I think that's a fallacy. Being married to an educator that spends at least 80 hours a week either teaching or preparing for teaching (was voted teacher of the year for her state in her field) she has never voiced that sentiment.

Oh, it's the great halfhearted call. The entire processional class in the human service sector can easily claim the same thing. Then advocates that call out the professional class in its actions can also legitimately claim that mantle.

After the legislative session I'm having, I'm not exactly sympathetic with the field either--especially when they pursue inaction which ends up traumatizing kids well into adulthood.

I'm tired of having teachers and administrators silencing problems of the system by saying "we go into this field to help kids." I just end up saying "then do it," when I really want to say "I don't buy it."

I've been a teacher for 12 years now and I've never said that either. But some teachers are agreeing with it.

They might not be the most pleasant of people, but many are proud of their altruism and their Goodness.

It's a great bumper sticker, but it's not true. You have so many kids with so many issues from clothing, parenting, to head lice, you don't lose sleep over anything other than your car payment.

It's just a job. They move in, they move on.

I don't recall ever losing sleep over a student.

Me too... teachers act so self-righteous. Most people do a job they like and so that they can make money. Get over it.

I always think it is kinda funny when some ex-student runs up and asks if I remember their name. The majority of the time my answer is, "nope".

It's just a job for some teachers --- not for others. I still worry about some of my students that I had 12 years ago when I started.

Really? You've never laid awake at night worried about a student?

Other than the ones I thought might attack me at night (couple of stalkers slashed my tire and put broken glass on my porch) no... Not that I recall.

Yours are little kids... mine are almost grown and by that time they are screwed up or not. Most screwy ones are also jerks, bullies, self involved drama queens or beyond help.

There is some kind of weird cultish-fetishizing thing with teachers. Yes, it's an important job but so is the garbage man.

Well some teachers suck and don't last very long, and a few get lucky and hang on. Just because some say it, doesn't make it true.

You're right the garbage man works directly with our kids on a daily basis. LOL

Every once in a well there a a real derp gem on here. You just said one.

You must just do what's required then. My wife remembers each and every student she has taught and she's been doing it for over 30 years.

Never said they work with kids, slick. Just said they serve an important purpose.

Truth.
Some people just go through the motions.

Give him the benefit of the doubt... maybe he teaches at a private school.

My entire point was that it isn't true.
