Netflix announces release date of show "Dear White People"

Being racist towards white people is ok, but being racist towards any other group is wrong. It's kind of like how it is ok to bash men, but not women.

I would say this is the true face of racism...

It appears as if Netflix is not doing so well with this. Here's a good analysis:

https://youtu.be/Mec0WBrwU70

I also heard that Netflix stock was not doing well, but cannot verify that.

Oh no! White people are being made fun of! It's the end of the world! Race wars! Scandal!

Have the people opposed to this ever watched South Park?

South Park goes after everyone, NOT THE SAME THING.

The best part is that they actually reset the counter for the video once by deleting and putting it back up. I swear every dumb ass company that does this **** does the same dumb nonsense. They get a whole bunch of hate, try to control things by deleting comments, end up deleting the video and re-uploading it, and then repeating the process with the video.

No, no I didn't.

It's just interesting the amount of white-bashing that Hollywood has decided it wants to do right now. Convenient as racial tensions are off the charts.

If you replaced "white" with the color of any other race, you would see massive backlash... as it rightfully should.

"Dear Black People" "Dear Brown People" "Dear Red People" "Dear Yellow People"

The list goes on.

How do you feel about the team name "Redskins"?

I don't have netflix but if I did I likely wouldn't cut off my nose to spite my face and cancel. I'd watch what does interest me and ignore the rest.

This is really no different than all the other calls to boycott some business that come up pretty frequently. All boycotts have that "cut off your nose to spite your face" element since the aim is to get business to lose customers who would ordinarily shop there or use their service.

Meh, I don't care. There's a lot of **** on Netflix that I don't watch and never have. This won't make me cancel our subscription.

Why would I unsubscribe?

To keep the Arts ideologically pure?

I won't watch the vast majority of the shows on Netflix. In part because I'm not interested, and in part because I don't have the time.
Why would I unsubscribe because there's one additional show on Netflix I'll never watch?

Good point. I think I've been unintentionally boycotting the large majority of Netflix shows for years now.

All the increased publicity is likely going to increase, not decrease the amount of viewers. Not unreasonable to suggest that many wouldn't have taken the time to watch it to begin with but likely will now just to see what it actually says.

True.
It's unlikely I would've heard of it if not for this thread.

My kids do most of the watching. They watch kids things. So that's what comes up in the suggestions, kid things—robots, cartoon animals, etc.

But, fortunately for the show, folks like the OP are promoting it for free on the interwebz.

Amazon Prime has one good show, and it's called Transparent. It deals with, supports, and pokes fun at the culture that advances LGBT and feminist rights. It's an incredible show because the acting, character development and production are spectacular. Jefferey Tambour of Arrested Development delivers the single greatest performance I've ever seen in a television show - better than the leads in True Detective.

I do have a point. Which is that I detest some of Transparent's themes (the rejection of traditional sexual identity is way too in-your-face) but it's a good show. I watch good shows. Not shows that make me feel right. If I only did that, I would have never watched Walker: Texas Ranger. And then my life would be empty.

UHG

Transparent is the WORST, we never saw the season 1 finale and quit on Season 2 like 3 episodes in. There isn't ONE Redeemable, decent person on that show. Bunch of egotistical, selfish, disgusting humans. Sorry I think Transparent is a very bad show, I love it's raised awareness and all but I fear it sent out the wrong message.

So this racism's bad because you're offended?

And what, exactly, is racist about this show?

Could you imagine a show called "Dear Black People" by white people about their perceived (satirically presented or not) feelings of racism from blacks at whites? A friend of mine is all up in arms over this, he thinks the whole thing is just stupid hypocritical and annoying. When I told him to chill that was his response and well... he does have a point.

I'd like to thank the alt right community here at DP for (once again) reminding me that snowflakes are white!

And also, thanks go out to Koke for alerting me to this new offering. I'm moving it straight to the front of my queue!
It currently has a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it looks awesome! :)

It's satire you snowflakes, get over it.

It is freaking hilarious watching the right get so "PC" all of a sudden.

Hypocrisy...they are soaking in it!

The **** is racist.

MTV did the same thing (and continue to do so) and they're rapidly losing popularity.

I'm also surprised with the amount of people who think it's okay to stay subscribed to a company who openly think it is okay to be racist. If the tables were turned, their company's reputation would be destroyed almost instantly.

They're getting backlash from it as they should though.

It is based on a movie of the same name that was written, directed and produced by a black man, Justin Simien. The executive producers are Devon Shepard (black guy), Stephanie Allain Bray (black woman), and Julia Lebedev (white woman).

Justin Simien is also writing for the series and will direct the first episode.

If it's racist, then these black racists should quit fueling the fire.

If it's what I think it's going to be - which is "****ing hilarious" - then ya'll need to chill out and enjoy the satire.

There's no hypocrisy, there's an asking for an even platform of free speech, as is clearly deserved in America.

The right has no problem with Netflix putting up a show that is shows an entire demographic in a condescending light.

Fundamentally, I'd have to problem with this either if the left had to problem with "radical" speakers giving their opinion on college campuses. Milo is actually pretty center-right and would vote for people like Rudy Giuliani but was rioted against and had his event shut down because "muh white supremacism"... a tag which he is actually almost the complete polar opposite to.

I'm confused. Can black people not be racist?

There really isn't enough in the clip for me to make a judgement. It may be more tongue in cheek than many think. Or not. I'll have to wait and see. Or not.

Frankly, Netflix could air Nazi propaganda and I wouldn't unsubscribe as long as they keep doing stuff like this as well:

;)

I’d be amazed if there wasn’t already shows and films on the platform (and others like it) that could be seen as racist on a similar basis, especially older ones. I’d suggest the different reaction here is more to do with the perception (with some justification) that this show is about making a political point rather than just making money.

Wells it's based off a movie with the same name that is described as a satirical comedy-drama, so I think you are right it may be more tongue in cheek.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dear_White_People

"My film isn't about 'white racism' or racism at all. My film is about identity. It's about the difference between how the mass culture responds to a person because of their race and who that person understands themselves to truly be. All explored through the microcosm of a success-oriented Ivy League college."

—Justin Simien, director of Dear White People, on the film.[8]
