Despite today’s outrage over President Donald Trump’s refugee executive order, many liberals in 1975 were part of a chorus of big name Democrats who refused to accept any Vietnamese refugees when millions were trying to escape South Vietnam as it fell to the communists.

They even opposed orphans.

The group, led by California’s Gov. Jerry Brown, included such liberal luminaries as Delaware’s Democratic Sen. Joe Biden, former presidential “peace candidate” George McGovern, and New York Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman.

The Los Angeles Times reported Brown even attempted to prevent planes carrying Vietnamese refugees from landing at Travis Air Force Base outside San Francisco.

The issue of what to do with the "boat people" was a huge topic of discussion back in the day. I was pretty young at the time but recall having a couple of refugee kids in our school.

While we didn't have the terror threat with the Vietnamese the situation isn't all that different. In both cases we started issues we failed to finish and the resultant "peaceful solution" didn't work out so well for a lot of the indigenous people.

What he did is fully okay. Every country of the world has similar regulations and we have controlled different populations differently for ever. But the way Trump did it was unspeakable. It was so unspeakable that he must have wanted the outrage.

He implemented the program the way a business person would have. You roll out the product knowing full well that there will be some confusion and misinterpretation. In a couple of days everyone gets over the change and you're back to business as usual.

Frankly, if the numbers I heard are correct and that only a few hundred people out of 30-40,000 in the pipeline were stuck that's a pretty good result.

Despite today's support of the LGBT people many liberals in 1972 hated the community. Like 1972 democratic primary front runner Edmund Muskie, "Goddamn it, if I have to be nice to a bunch of sodomites to be elected President, then **** it"

Greetings, Lutherf. :2wave:

:agree: His statement was all-inclusive, which was the correct way of describing historical facts, IMO, because many other people who were not even Jewish - gypsies, those with mental or physical disabilities, the very aged and sick, etc - were also killed, although the millions of Jewish people who were the original scapegoats perished as a result of lies and constant propaganda used against them by the Nazi government!

As an aside, can you imagine what the reaction would have been if Trump had mentioned only the Jewish people - we'd probably be reading posts demanding Trump to explain why he only cared about his son-in-law and his family, who are Jewish, and the H*** with all the others who also died!
