"Today we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another, or from one party to another, but we are transferring power from Washington, D.C. and giving it back to you, the American people," he said in his inaugural address which lasted less than 20 minutes.

With the outgoing president, Barack Obama, and the congressional leadership sitting right behind him, Trump used his trademark bluntness to indict the way the nation's capital has operated for the last decade

"For too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost," he argued. "Washington flourished - but the people did not share in its wealth," he added.

"Their triumphs have not been your triumphs; and while they celebrated in our nation’s capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land."

Seems like there was a time when Democrats could really have gotten behind that.

As I and a couple other liberals/progressives/democrats have posted in another thread, we are behind it. I support a great many (though not quite all) ideals Trump set forth in his speech. My problem with Trump is that I think the way he plans to go about realizing those ideals won't work. But I have vowed to wait and see. If they do work, I'll change my thinking.

The speech was fine. I'll wait and judge him by his actions if you don't mind.

Good for you.

I held out high hopes for O bomb a as well, but he dashed them in haste after his first election. But I agree, lets wait and see. I am knocking on wood and keeping my fingers crossed. Would be something extraordinary certainly.

You cannot transfer power to people when the government is predicated on the power of the people being exercised through the very representatives that Trump tried to vilify.

If they are smart they will. The best thing they can do is join in a bipartisan way and work with Trump to get their favorable ratings up. There are plenty of areas they can fight over for 2018 and 2020. Trump has stolen their platform.

It all depends on who is talking in modern times, about the perceptions and assumptions and delusions of what is in the speakers mind and heart.

Not the ideas.

The representatives are not representing the people and don't have their interests to heart, that's the whole point.

The people's representatives are their representatives. Unless Trump is planning to install direct democracy, he has not and cannot do anything about it.
