Reparations: If we pay, then what?

Someone please fill me in. If we were to pay blacks reparations for slavery... and by "we" I mean all of us through the government... what would that accomplish?

Serious question.

What would it accomplish? Would everything be better? (Note I said "better", not fixed.) Would opportunities for blacks be better? What, exactly, would be gained?

Then we continue paying come Welfare Day every month.

There's no end game with reparations, only a fool would believe that. It's just a hustle to get money out of dopey white people who never learn a lesson. Obama was supposed to be a form of reparations too, remember? How'd that go?

Reparations?

We can deduct what they have already been paid in Food Stamps Sec 8 rent etc

No. It wouldn't be long before Al and Jessie said it wasn't enough.

It would set an interesting precedent; and by "interesting" I mean like the old Chinese curse...may you live in interesting times.

Would there be a demand that all Black Americans contribute toward reparations for all the riot damage and physical assaults/murders committed regularly by the violent few?

Would there be a demand that all members of the Muslim community contribute toward reparations for all acts of terror perpetrated by members of their faith?

I could go on but I think anyone can see the point. Where would the demands and expectations end?

Arguments for undeserved mass reparations are a useless exercise of sophistry. The illogic of victimhood mentality. :coffeepap:

Well it wouldn't be just for slavery but for apartheid, jim crow, racial profiling etc. I figure there must be a reason 1 in 3 black men spend time in jail

The idea is they could possibly get out of the ghetto or transform the ghetto and pursue opportunities other than drug dealing and popping out babies to get on welfare. Whether it would succeed, i think it would take a generation or two, because you can't erase half a lifetime of poverty from a person's memory. Look at black athletes who continue to commit crimes at the same rate and it's apparent that $ can't solve everything instantly

Absolutely nothing. Except maybe the black community could stop using slavery as an excuse for every shortcoming in their lives.

This is the second thread started in the last 24 hours about so-called slavery reparations. Why's that? Has something arisen in the media over there to bring the issue to the fore? It's always seemed like a very marginal issue to me. What stirring y'all up about it?

We have slaves? Not talking about sex slaves and other versions of slavery here. So please fill me in on why I owe anyone anything.

Greater racial division and more stupidity to follow.

There is a reason...they break the law at a higher rate % wise than any other group in America

Only two threads? That's actually pretty mild.

In the interest of full disclosure, mine is predicated on the other thread, but I wanted to investigate another angle and not hi-jack the other thread.

some professor somewhere advocated that white people keep a reparations piggy bank in the past couple days. my guess is that fox or some pundit with a radio show picked it up and has the right all hot and bothered about it. always keep the people scared and angry; easier to manipulate them that way. that isn't just a right wing strategy, either, as will become readily apparent in the coming years.

I'm glad we have the second amendment.

I honestly don't get the scared and/or angry angle. It comes off as a weak PC-like vilification, and attempt to silence discussion, of the people wishing to express their opinions against the idea.

If someone proposes and idea... any person and any idea on any topic... that topic is open for discussion. Isn't that the way things are supposed to be?

the chances that some politician is going to force you to set up a "reparations" account approach zero. however, the confirmation bias entertainment media loves to keep its viewers hot and bothered for the sake of ratings. this is a non-story.

General comment: In politics the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Loud minority voices often get what they want eventually if left unopposed. Not always, but often. Maybe it's because it fools the politicians that the sentiment is more prevalent than it really is. Maybe it's just to make the loud people STFU and go away. Maybe it's a combo of both. Politicians know that they get re-election votes for giving the people what they want, even if it's not wise. Hence, it is not illegitimate for people to speak against something even if it's "not likely to happen".

Why do some get so put off when others want to speak against something? The debate isn't hurting anything. If we individually are that disinterested we should simply move along. If we want to say it's not likely to happen, that's fine, and probably not incorrect, but to denigrate those who wish to speak their mind opposingly is disingenuous.

i don't believe that you believe that you'll ever have to set up a "reparations account." i do believe that the pundits are doing what they have always done, though : picking some proposal that isn't going to happen, and then using it to stir up viewers / listeners. there's good money in it, and that's what they're mostly about.

An account I agree completely. That aspect is not bloody likely. My participation on the topic has been more with reparations as a concept.

I believe the person who who brought up the account aspect was just doing something unusual to gain attention for them self and/or the concept. It was just a ploy.

reparations, as traditionally understood, are pretty unlikely, especially in the near future. however, it's undeniable that slavery and more than a century of systemic racism are still having an effect today. what to do about it? recognize that it still isn't a completely level playing field, and work to make it more level, IMO.
