Does anyone have a non biased non politically charged definition of what FAKE NEWS is? I had thought that it referred to the presentation of material that the writer or presenter knew was false but was disguised and presented in such a way as to fool the reader that it was a legitimate news story.

But in the last 24 hours we see the term applied to a news story which parts could be immediately verified as truthful although the content that could be verified was not intended as false.

So what is your unpolitical charged definition of what FAKE NEWS is?

InfoWars, Drudge, Salon, etc.

"Fake News" in my mind, would just be a news story circulating that is false.

Examples:
Clinton Campaign Chairman John Podesta Involved in Satanic 'Spirit Cooking' : snopes.com

Did Donald Trump Appoint Sarah Palin as a Science Advisor? : snopes.com

Or any conspiracy website out there like InfoWars.

Watch Anchorman 2.

Fake News is news that is false...News that is not properly verified, based on heresay typically for politically, fame or slanderous reasons

InfoWars, Drudge, Salon, etc.

Drudge? :lamo

Just shows how clueless your are

Drudge is not a News site never was!!! Never claimed to be

Its just a site that post links to syndicated web content such as online newspapers, blogs, podcasts, and video blogs,,,from the AP to everyone else

In these times, whether news is fake or not seems to be irrelevant.
If enough people believe a story, and convince enough people to come into their thought bubble, then it becomes true.

Fake news would be news whose factual claims are false. Fake news is not reporting about people saying something that is wrong, as the news is about what the person said(eg if Trump says the real unemployment rate is 42 %, he is factually wrong, but news reports of him saying it are accurate, so not fake news). I find that most claims of fake news fall into that later category. If a news source reports that space aliens are invading, and there are no aliens around, that is fake news. If a major public figure claims space aliens are invading, and cover that claim, that is not fake news as the public figure really did make the claim.

There are some grey areas that are really hard to judge, involving such things as anonymous sources. It seems the standard on when to report claims from such anonymous sources was much stricter than it is now. I tend to consider any story based solely on such anonymous sources to be suspect(though being human I have caught myself giving them too much credence at times).

Another area that is a growing problem is fake headlines. Stories that themselves are based on factual reporting, but the headline is wildly inaccurate. Too many people do not read past the headline...

If it's not true and verified, it's fake. That leaves rumor, innuendo, unsubstantiated allegations, and the stuff written on public bathroom walls as fake. And without all of the latter, CNN has nothing to report. Weird, huh?

Fake news
NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, AP, NYT, WAP, CNN, MSNBC

Thats off the top of my head

Why FAKE and not simply incorrect?

Why FAKE and not simply incorrect?

I'm going to agree with you on this one. I think there's a lot of confusion about what is fake. I think fake is when stories are actually fabricated, where the story is just made up without any semblance of truth.

If it is verified, it won't be incorrect.

I think we all agree on that. But that does not answer the question. Is a story that is not completely verified or contains inaccuracies FAKE NEWS?

This is my take as well. On the other hand, authors who get stories or parts of stories wrong don't make them fake. Also, authors who let their bias enter the story doesn't make it fake either.

Does the person authoring the story have to know it is false?

Depends. If it's coming from a source like InfoWars, or a satirical news site (because people have been circulating those too), they pretty much know that what they are pushing is false.

But another site might just pick it up, and not bother to verify it's credibility.

No. You are conflating poor reporting with fake news. The big difference is intent. Poor reporting woud intend to do it right and ****s it up. Fake news sets out from the start trying to decieve by propogating what they know is an outright lie.

Fake news often doesn't begin from a "news" site. So your point, as usual, is pointless.
