First the GOP tries to dismantle the Indepedent ehtics committee and now they are pushing through Trump's nominees without the full ethics background check. So are ethics old fashioned in the new GOP world? And how do we know when the milionaires and billionaires who are part of Trump's cabinet run into conflicts between their business interests and their positions in the cabinet? They say they will divest themselves, but how do we know if we don't know what they own?

Trump is in a hurry, but crossing all of the "t's" and dotting all of the "i's" is part of governing, and Trump doesn't get a pass on it. Ethics reviews first, and hearings afterward.

I think they are generally "old fashioned" in the aggregate Republocrat world.

Republicans used to at least pretend to be the party of family values and character. They don't even bother pretending anymore. Even all the evangelicals who used to go on and on about electing good Christians now say things like, "Hey, it isn't like we are trying to elect a pope."

What is, "the full ethics background check"?

Ethics in what sense?. "Old fashioned" ethics would have excluded divorcees and gays. As to the conflict of interests issues we probably have been sloppy on that front and must reform the rules. We really don't want to forbid wealthy citizens from office.

That is an interesting question.

It's the newest Left wing talking point. Before youbknow it, they'll act like it's something real.

Liberals and ethics are like oil and water. They most certainly are passé in the liberal world. I suppose the GOP is trying to fight fire with fire.

In the sense you have to know if when they are making decisions that they are making the best ones for our country rather than the best ones for their personal fortunes. This is also a major problem with Trump and his families. We are not rulling out the wealthy from being part of government, but they have to eliminate anything that could conflict with their duties to our country. That is what a blind trust is all about.

What a pile of bull****e, give us some proof of liberals and ethics being like oil and water.. You will agree with anything the GOp does apparently. You can make all of the excuses you want for what is happening with our goverment under the GOP, but even old time GOPer's are complaining about what is happening. That is the real reason that the GOP backed off on eliminating the Ethice committee. Nothing to do with Trump, it was because they got so much flack from their own party members.

I'm reading that supposedly the appointees aren't providing their information. This doesn't make sense to me. Since when does the Federal government need information from ANYONE to run exhaustive background checks?

This kind of useless crap drives me crazy. Why has congress not passed laws about this crap? We are a NATION of laws. Hundreds of thousand, millions, of them. Yet no laws about what needs to be provided starting with income tax returns for presidential candidates through to THIS.

Congress really IS a swamp.

As I have stated in other messages on this post, we need the info necessary to insure that the decisions that cabinet holders make are for the country and not for their personal wealth. That is why the ethics committee looks into the appointees backgrounds and lets them know what they have to place in the blind trust. Otherwise I as a cabinet holder could make a decision that would make money for me and hurt the country as a whole and no one would know.
