It appears that Trump wants to cut our spy agencies. He says it is because they have become to politicized, but is it? It really seems to be because they have pointed out the Russian hacking and how it might have effected the outcome of the election. His bromance with Putin also seems to be more important to him than the country he is supposed to lead for the next four years. Many in the GOP seem to understand the need, especially now, for our intelleigence agencies, but will they have the guts to go against their new president? I guess we will see if they do. We will see who in both parties are more interested in protecting this country rather than protecting their party.

We have so many that effectively duplicate services that they should be consolidated.

Not really. I served 20 years in the intelligence community (DIA). We do have a lot of intelligence agencies but each has their own lanes. Sure, there is some overlap at the edges but I can't think of an intelligence agency we could eliminate without reducing overall effectiveness. I guess you could consolidate some of them but that would just be moving resources around rather than being a savings.

It seems the intention is to shift the emphasis from personnel in the offices to personnel in the field. A good move, and very long overdue. That some of these agencies are directed by political appointees is bothersome as well. I would prefer that they were filled by term appointments, similar the FBI.

Send the excess to Wall Street, where there are plenty of felons to prosecute.

They could cut every single CIA, NSA, and DIA employee, and I would be happy. The alternative is to keep our CIA, NSA, and DIA. And that doesn't help anyone except the GS and SES employees sucking up our taxdollars.

Consolidation reduces administrative expenses. Is there really a significant risk in combining the operations of MSIC and NASIC for example?

If all we are talking about is consolidating the administrative aspects then that is fine. But Trump's people are making it sound like it is more substantive than that.

They can make it sound anyway they want, but the intelligence community will make sure that they end up with more, not less, as the end product. They are very good at that game.
