Biggest Financial Pitfalls for the Average Citizen

Not budgeting and accounting for where every penny goes. There's an old management adage that says "if you can measure it, you can a manage it." That goes in triplicate for money.
I like that.

There's an old engineering adage counterpart: "If you can't put a number to it, you don't know what you're talking about!"

18 years? Anyone who thinks their kid is going to be independent by 18 is in for a big surprise. 21 years minimum if not longer.
Yeah, eighteen's when they're just starting to get expensive! :doh

True story. Two weekends ago my 26 year old son moved into his own apartment - well kind of, we own it and he's paying us rent. Anyway the refrigerator is now noticeably more full than it used to be and the trips to the grocery store have gone down significantly. So I'm talking to my mom yesterday and say something like "Yeah mom, with Anthony gone there's a lot more food in the house. That kid could really eat." Mom's response? "You think you were any different?"

Thanks mom. :)

Funny how when we're young, we say we'll never be like them! (our parents)

But once we get kids of our own, we realize just how good a job they did!

Point being I think thats one of the biggest issues without our poverty situation in the US. Too many poor people with children. Birth rates highest among the poorest. Exactly the opposite of the way it should be.

and if they've been in foster care, that's when they have to start fending for themselves.
Yeah, sad.

It's throwing them to the wind. :(

No guarantees for life to be fair ...

Nope. Never was fair, and never will be.

My youngest grandson (age 10) likes to lament that it (whatever it is at the time) isn't fair. I tell him he's right, it's not fair, and never will be.

On a related note.

Beside the 'Polish Payment Plan', my Pop had another great (immigrant) saying:

"Americ is a democracy, but our family is not - now do what I told you!"

Yes, a family should be a dictatorship with two dictators, Mom and Dad.
