Trump Plans to Work with Dreamers

So anti-immigration people what are your thoughts on this? I thought people had to go back to their countries

Trump's new approach on immigrant children divides Republicans - CBS News

The main problem that I see is our stupid system of granting priority immigration status to relatives which would still reward the parents of dreamers and anchor babies. You also still have the issue of what is a "kid" (under age 6, 16 or 26?) - meaning that a single day's difference in the (alleged?) age at the time of (undocumented?) illegal entry makes a huge difference.

If the choice is this or nothing, hopefully the hard line Repubs aren't stupid.

I guess if you consider enforcing the law as written is no longer to be expected then we are in deep trouble. That is much like saying to ignore the stop play whistle in football because later review might have let the play continue.

Don't you think most people would be okay with CHANGING the law somehow to show compassion for anchor babies and others who may not even know they aren't citizens?

I am not interested. They are here unlawfully. They can go home. My compassion meter is full.

This is the "only Nixon could go to China" syndrome.

The GOP Congress may agree to the Bridge Act being put together by Graham and Durbin with djt as POTUS.

They would have just said a unanimous HELL NO if Clinton was POTUS, as they did to Obama for 8 years.

Each of these 'compromises' by djt strengthens his 2020 hand .

Only if they intend to convey privilege to those that brought them here rather than have obeyed the law. I recall all sorts of promises to "first secure the border" before any action on "immigration reform" is on the table - if that was a lie then all trust is gone. Why did we waste money on enforcing laws that did not really matter?

Well they'll love the idea as long as it comes from a Republican. Wait for TrumpCare to hit the shelves!

djt is in constant election now reelection mode.

He knows his base will reelect him in the 2020 primaries.

He's expanding his general election base in the swing states.

He, McConnell and Priebus are already plotting a filibuster-proof Senate after the 2018s .

OK what is the "new" law? Bring (or later have) kids and you can stay too?

Here's the quote:

“We’re going to work something out that’s going to make people happy and proud,” Trump said. “They got brought here at a very young age, they’ve worked here, they’ve gone to school here. Some were good students. Some have wonderful jobs. And they’re in never-never land because they don’t know what’s going to happen.” Trump did not offer details, and Time said that he did not back off his pledge to undo Obama’s executive actions.

Now I prefer to think he is talking about kids in their early teens who were literally raised almost from birth (since if they were born here they would be citizens by birth) and are American in almost every way other than birthright.

IMO he is suggesting that these kids be given special consideration in applying for legal immigration. Allowing them to remain under legal resident status (green card) while they apply through normal immigration channels.

I see nothing wrong with this.

Trump appears to be in learning how to be successful in DC elite mode - say anything to get there and then do what keeps other elites in DC cooperative.

That's exactly what Obama wanted to do.

So? Have you ever seen me post any denigrating comments about President Obama in this forum?

People can have different opinions on differing issues.

My opinions on immigration are posted in several threads. That I oppose allowing mass refugee migration into the USA, but support all valid avenues of LEGAL immigration. :coffeepap:

I would. But I know others wouldn't be.

ttwtt--to tell what the truth--is concerning djt--follow his ttwtt-er.

The fascinating dynamic I see is between the GOP Congress/Priebus/swamp elites versus Bannon/alt-right/millionaires-billionaires. That comparison may be imperfect and simplistic.

I'm betting McConnell is the only person trump fears.

trump also knows Priebus and the RNC got him elected.

Compromising on DACA makes trump look human to a large group of voters he needs to look human to.

There are a number of links from google on the Bridge Act.

Uh Refugees are legal.

You guys still don't get Trump. "Throwing 'em all out" was just the opening salvo in what would be a series of discussions over immigration. The final deal will be something more moderate most likely that will improve border security and strengthen enforcement of immigration laws.

Trump always demands more than he expects to get.

I post as totally Texas white trailer trash & my zip code and I do not follow anything/anyone on Twitter. My point was only that Trump is perhaps the quickest politician yet to flip-flop (rapidly evolve?) on his campaign positions - vague as they were.

Dreamers, like anchor babies, are going to end up costing plenty as they invite all sorts of family members to join them in the land of handouts. We have immigration law for a reason and that reason is to avoid exactly this kind of mess - the conversion of illegal immigrants into special guests and/or legal immigrants that were pushy enough to ignore the law. What message does that send to those that obey the law and stay in their lousy homelands awaiting our permission to enter?

Considering the way many of his supporters foamed at the mouth when Obama suggested it, I can't imagine why they'd accept it.

Oh wait, it's Trump. They'll accept anything from him.
