You mean former Hillary Clinton supporter and Trump detractor; truly, the most unbiased of sources in the midst of the election. And I've seen his statement on it, and it's full of holes. Namely, for it to be a violation of the hatch act it must be proven that he did it for the purpose of interfering with or affecting the result of an election. And the article is filled with nothing but assumptions and supposition, rather than any kind of hard evidence, to suggest that it is any way provable that the purpose of Comey's release was for interfering with the election as opposed to a plethora of other potential purposes.
Also, and it truly pains me that I actually have to inform you of this piece, but the random belief of an ethics counselor is not in any way the basis for which illegality is proven or determined in this country. I'm sorry that you're apparently showing such utter disdain and disrespect for our legal system and the rights bestowed upon citizens in this country of innocent until proven guilty, but your displeasure and distaste with our legal system is not a legitimate means of ignoring it. The reality is that Comey has not even been CHARGED with any crime, let alone actually convicted, so any accusation of him breaking the law is a rather hollow cry. Especially when it's born off frivolous and hollow arguments such as has been submitted.
So I can take the word of the White House Counsel for Ethics under President Bush or I can take your evaluation of the situation. Thats easy. He is knowledgable. He is experienced. He is educated in the area we are talking about. And you are merely here.
Of course this does not determine guilt in a court of law. Hopefully, that will come in time. But that is not the point. Legitimacy is something that is a sheen - like respectability or like honesty. It is earned and it is perceived and it is held by the person issuing that opinion based on how they see things. And the Comey actions are enough to raise that ugly specter. It does not matter if he has not yet been indicted. It does not matter if he ever is indicted. He has already done enough to stain the process.
The thing that you just don't get is that this is party YOUR FAULT. You and everyone who supports the EC despite knowing that the second place finisher in the vote of the people can end up in the White House. You support it knowing that. You support it knowing that in 2000, it was decided by a one vote margin on a badly divided Supreme Court arguing about hanging chads in one state.
And then when the critics of the EC mechanism come forth - you bristle.
And when the critics of the EC mechanism point out the flaws in the system - you take umbrage.
And when the critics of the EC mechanism raise serious issues regarding this hold over from an age which no longer exists - you get irked... you lash out ... you attack .... you bare your fangs and you mock in partisan anger.
And you brought all this upon yourself and your fellow EC supporters because you knew the chances in advance and you rolled the dice anyways.
And you brought this on Trump. And in the eyes of many Americans, and I suspect that list will grow over time, those who view his presidency as illegitimate will only grow because you saddled him with a system that makes a loser in one category a winner in another category. All because you want to retain discredited mechanism from the 1700's that was designed to thwart the will of the people. Well the will of the people has indeed been thwarted. You reap what you sow.
The reality is that some 120 to 130 million Americans vote. And the reality is that the EC turns that entire process into a mockery because it permits the efforts of all those voters to be reduced to a mere step in a process that turns the actual decision over to elites that renders their decision moot.
As long as you and others support that system - you will have to accept that it gives us a president that is viewed as illegitimate by many Americans. That is simply a card you dealt yourself and have only your own support for that system to blame.
And all the anger aimed at me does not change that reality.
