From Paris to Syria through San Bernardino to Afghanistan, the world witnessed obscene and unsufferable tragedy in 2015. That was on top of the ongoing misery of hundreds of millions who are literally stunted by poverty, living lives shortened by preventable disease and malnutrition. But for all of that, 2015 also saw continued progress toward better quality of life for the considerable majority of the planet, alongside technological breakthroughs and political agreements that suggest the good news might continue next year and beyond. Tragedy and misery are rarer than they were before 2015—and there is every reason to hope they will be even less prevalent in 2016.

The news media, the politicians, and the bureaucrats love to gin up the doom and gloom, but the fact of the matter is that the human race is better off than ever before.

Less crime, less war, less starvation, less disease, less child mortality. The world is better-educated, better-fed, healthier, freer, and more tolerant—and it looks set to get richer, too.

Shhhhh..... this is supposed to be a secret. ESPECIALLY in an election year. :)

Have said this for years. World is always getting better.

I try to tell the doom and gloomers this all the time. People are stuck on nostalgia that somehow has them believing that any time is better than right now and their proof? "HAVE YOU SEEN THE NEWS LATELY!!11!1!!!!"

Stats come out and always show life getting better. News makes money in making you think its not.

1.3 billion Chinese...1.1 billion Indians...250 million Indonesians, Malaysians, Pakistanis, Mexicans, etc... Humans are far and away better off.

The average Chinese teen , in 2 generations, has gone from wondering where his next bowl of rice will come from to when is the next update on his IPhone.

There was a good chance that an India would succumb to famine, disease in the next decade. Now he is more concerned with cricket results.

What in the **** are you on about?

My world is pretty good too. No complaints.

Not being religious but THANK GOD for it! Beats the hell out of what was going on 8-10 years ago.

If Obama gets the credit, so be it. If not, so be that too. I don't care. Life is good. It is what it is.

Don't swallow all the negative hype from the whackos. Their life apparently still sucks.

Not my problem. Obama's either. Some folks are destined to suck. No politics will change that.

Less to do with politics and more to do with the general advancement of human civilization.

If he gets blamed for all of the bad things that happen during his presidency, it's only fair he gets credit for the good things that happen. Thanks Obama!

I'm sure the world is getting better. The problem is that the U.S. is not getting better.

That made me slightly nauseous.

I'm pretty sure almost any improvement to American life was despite Barry rather than because of him.

Yeah, and it made me nauseous to have to listen to the high pitched squealing for the past 7 years that the evil tyrant muslim anti-christ was going to ruin America, ban guns and christianity, and bring the world to armageddon. I've been hearing so much about how horrible the world has gotten from everyone it's nice to hear that I was right and they're just hyperbolic exaggerations. The world is getting better. This is the most peaceful, prosperous time in human history. More people have rights, healthcare and food in their stomaches than ever before.

That seems like a good candidate for a signature, seriously.

Its all yours if you want it. I'm still too fond of the one I have.

Wrong. The US is also getting better.

Partisan drivel. The same general advancements that have occurred over his presidency would have most likely happened during any presidency. He provided no hindrance.

Wrong. The US is also getting better.

Not wrong. A difference of opinion.

Just depends on who you ask. Workers have lost ground for sure, as seen in the dismantling of unions, the exportation of white and blue collar jobs and destruction of the middle class. That's bad. What's good is drug laws are starting to turn around and the marginalization of minorities is seeing some real turn-around. Would gays be happy to return to the rampant homophobia of the seventies in return for a more secure workforce? Would *I* be happy to return to an era of the dominance of successful art galleries knowing that that time was more brutal to gays and women?

Things getting marginally better is hardly a thing to pat ourselves on the back for

As I said, a difference of opinion.

As I said, a difference of opinion.

It's less a matter of opinion and more of who you ask, because some groups have objectively, measurably gained ground while others have objectively, measurably lost it.

Well let's stick to stats:

That seems to be going in the right direction as of the early 90's.
