Do reporters in the US have the right to confidentiality like doctors and Priests

No they do not. However, neither do doctors in court proceedings. Priests do. Clergy privilege is the strongest privilege in US law. Spouse privilege is very strong. Lawyer-client privilege has been throw out the window by Mueller and company. It basically does not exist anymore.

It varies from state to state.

yes, in 36 states with shield laws but there is no federal shield law, which means that a journalist could be required to reveal his or her source, if the information does not harm the good of the people then under lockes social contract theory it should be open to the public, a shield law would hold the government accountable for transparency

Why should they? Wouldn't you then have "fake news" ?

it is up to the reader to take the weight of the article, without a confidential source we never would have the whole story on watergate

What a delightfully asinine thing to assert.
