A UK teacher was taken off the plane on which he was escorting British pupils on a visit to the USA. He's English born, brought up in Wales, and has never visited any of the listed countries. The only logical reason for a valid visa-holder being ejected from the flight is that his given name is Mohammed.

Welsh high school teacher on class trip kicked off flight to US despite holding valid visa | Wales - ITV News

He was actually half-way there in Iceland, where they had a one-day educational stopover, when he was "randomly" stopped, searched, and even let aboard the plane with his fellow teachers and pupils, before being removed. He was given no reason.

If one takes security seriously, these thinhs will happen. Ted Kennedy had something similar happen to him at one point.

I must have missed that. What I read said his name is Juhel Miah.
Either way, it's disgraceful.

If that is his name and he travels as Juhel Miah, then perhaps therein is the issue.

I think I read it wrong. I think it means that had his name been Mohammed there might have been a valid reason but since it wasn't...

See Ben Franklin.

You are NOT free when you allow unreasonable search and seizure and deny due process.

I love the American right....all the drama and bluster over "American exceptionalism" the constitution and dare we mention the "founding fathers"....but when you mention a Muslim name, they cower in fear, wiping the sweat from their brow with the very same constitution they claim to defend.

American exceptionalism was clearly displayed when Americans allowed the passage of the "Patriot act".

You are going to have to change your attitudes under Trump. If he, as promised, stops illegal immigration, America will not have enough entry level workers to meet current demand, let alone all these so-called jobs that have been 'given away' which Trumps says he will "bring back".

I'm looking at the related articles and they sure are doing their damndest to make this a...

How do you know it wasn't just a problem with the guys passport and not because Trump and America are evil?

The operational terms are reasonable and due process. I dont really think that so unreasonable and what would be due process in this case? And is this an American citizen or on US soil? I think it is better to clarify the important facts before spitting bile.

PS: What is it you dislike about the Patriot Act beyond the name?

Really? You actually have to ask that?

Democracy isn't your strong suit is it? But, it is typical of an American conservative..."lock her up" is your war cry isn't it...who needs a stinkin' trial. My Lord you guys are so transparent

Actually, political science, optimal political systems and in particular democratic structures and constitutions was something I did quite a bit of at and after university.

So, it would be interesting, what exactly it is, that you dislike.

I don't believe you. If you have to ask the question you have NO understanding of rights and freedoms, like most American conservatives you default to authoritarianism. You have done it hear while furthering the fear agenda.

It has been my experience that the only part of the US constitution understood by the right is the second amendment. And let's face it, historically America has a long, established record of ignoring it's much touted constitution when it suited them. And anticipating your response, let's start with Joe McCarthy and HUDAC.

That just about says it. You don’t know specifics and just dislike. That is quite normal though. I run into this in economics in the same way.people often have strong opinions but don't know any of the formal learning.

Possibly. Having searched the terrorist watch list for financial transactions, I can vouch that is the one name that will return half the database that is for sure. LOL.

Rather embarrassing. Makes us look pathetic.

Through out that article there was no reason given for the teacher to be pulled off of the plane. It even says that straight out. Yet here you are, and the article, both suggesting and implying that it was done because of Trump's EO. No facts given other than that he was coming to the US and was in Iceland and on a school field trip.

None.

Do you not see how this is idiotic? How it is irresponsible "journalism"? It is this kind of crap that is exactly why more and more people are disregarding what the media says. Half truths and implications is all that I've seen in the media for quite awhile...but for the past year its been far worse than I have ever seen in over 40 years.

Think you meant "HUAC".

What does exactly? What facts in this article leads you to believe that what happened with that teacher "makes us look pathetic"? Please do tell.

The whole thing was handled horribly: We are appalled by the treatment of Mr Miah and are demanding an explanation. The matter has also been raised with our local Member of Parliament.

No satisfactory reason has been provided for refusing entry to the United States – either at the airport in Iceland or subsequently at the US Embassy in Reykjavik.

Mr Miah attempted to visit the Embassy; but was denied access to the building.

Understandably he feels belittled and upset at what appears to be an unjustified act of discrimination.

Still does not say why.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't care about the why. This is just plain ridiculous.

Anyone can be refused entry for any reason whether you like it or not.
The cbp has always has that power.

There is no appeal because he doesn't have that right in the airport. He was not in the US.

If I get pulled over from a police officer (for whatever reason) he must tell me why. He can't just take away my right to drive and leave me hanging for xxx amount of time. Would we ever question taking such a right away? There are legal parameters police officers have to work within for the purpose of checks and balances of power. If you gave them free reign to pull people over for whatever reason without disclosure we all know what that would create- A police state.

IMO, the CBP is way overstepping it's bounds if they can take away someone's right of flight and say nothing. People should at the very least be given a reason. I think the reason they don't want to tell you is so they can arbitrarily do what they want without any real limits. I find it awful.
