Pledge: no more HATE SPEECH[W:72, 161]

Democracy can not be enforced against the will of the Vast Majority. The will of the Vast Majority is the Law.

In a recent Bloomberg poll of 1,001 adults, Citizens United — which paved the way for the rise of super PACs and other forms of political spending — was viewed unfavorably by 78 percent of respondents, who said the decision was so bad it should be overturned.
Americans Agree On One Thing: Citizens United Is Terrible

Sometimes yes.

Sometimes no.

Stop trying to quell freedom of expression.

Yeah shame on me for asking people to simply refrain from hate or the absolute cheapest of cheap shots. :doh:roll:

Re: Pledge: no more HATE SPEECH[W:72]

Because in nearly every society known to man from the primordial ooze to date, homosexuality has been seen as a defect or less than admirable trait. Thus, when someone is looking for an insult, calling someone who isn't gay, gay is the best insult going.

And the only way to stop it, is to make being gay something admirable, or preferred behavior. And...good luck with that.

"the best insult going".

Got it. :doh:shock::roll:

Re: Pledge: no more HATE SPEECH

how about...we screen Muslim immigrants better. that might work too.

I do not think they commit more homicide then Americans on average. Does anyone have any data.

It would be better and wiser to get those who are offended to toughen up and stop being offended.

Re: Pledge: no more HATE SPEECH[W:72]

Sarcasm is a form of bullying, which is pervasive and necessary in human societies, let us be clear about that. Sometimes the people who use it have good intent, most of the time they think they do but really dont.

I'm confused by you at times. They think they do but they don't? Are you saying they are unaware of their own intentions or are you calling sarcastic people liars?

As a note, psychologically sarcasm is not extraordinarily well studied. However, there are some positive effects of it such as increased creativity and lateral thinking. There is a purpose for it, especially between individuals who know each other well. If the only type of humor/communication a person engages in is sarcasm that's destructive, but how is that unique? I would submit that sarcasm is like many things in life: best used in thoughtful moderation.

One thing that is obvious to me coming out of the terrible events of a week ago in Orlando is that all the gay bashing and homophobic language in our society contributes to an environment which makes acts like this possible since the perpetrator can rationalize it as somehow justified on a marginalized and outsider group who is openly mocked, scorned and ridiculed by even decent people.

I would hope we lear a valuable lesson from the 49 people killed and the lesson is one thing we all can do is STOP OUR OWN HATE SPEECH.

No more gay jokes.

No more derogatory 'homo' references.

No more attacks on somebody saying they perform homosexual acts. to demean or insult them.

No more. Enough is enough.

I remember being in grade school and there was this boy who was very awkward and had rather large buck teeth and was puny and small and lots of other kids used to tease him rather badly. And I also participated from time to time. And then one day when he stood up to recite something, a kid pulled his chair back and when he sat down he banged his chin on the desk and messed up some teeth pretty badly.

Now this was a Catholic school and there was hell to pay for that as the boy who did it was never seen again after that day being expelled. And the rest of us were lectured with great severity about what happened and how we made it all possible. And that boy was never picked on again as far as I know since we all say that enough is enough.

Lets learn from Orlando and each pledge to abstain from homophobic hate speech even if we think its harmless or just teasing or playing around or any other phony justification we can think up to defend its use.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and the solution to the problem starts with each of us.
Why is this in a Constitutional forum?

May, or may not, address the points later.

It would be better and wiser to get those who are offended to toughen up and stop being offended.

It is irrelevant if anyone is offended. What is important is that we consider Freedom of Speech one of Fundamental Human Rights.

Unless there is imminent danger associated with a particular brand of speech there is no constitutional basis to ban it. I actually find the insinuation that free speech should be prohibited as more offensive than the words which I may even agree with you, might offend me.

sticks and stones...

If you want to amend the CONSTITUTION, there is a process by which to do so. My argument is with those who wish to bypass the CONSTITUTION because it is difficult. It's supposed to be.

The OP wishes to eliminate this previous amendment.

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

I have a hard time bying this. The Orlando massacure was able to happen because humans have the capacity to kill one another. I certainly don't buy that it's because of gay jokes. Not when the perpetrator is from a culture that stones young men to death for being gay.

The worst threat to homosexuality is islamic culture.

The concept of "hate speech" is an effort to sensor speech. Essentially it is the enemy of the first amendment.

We disagree. I think every American needs to first sweep their own doorstep on this matter.

We disagree.
That is fine, but I have to ask you a question.

There are nations within a certain culture that sentence gay people to death for being gay. Worse than that, there are nations that will execute young boys for being the victims of rape.

What culture do you think this is? What nations do you think have these laws?

I think every American needs to first sweep their own doorstep on this matter.
I am having trouble coming up with a tone in the entirety of American history where we had an issue with exterminating gay people.

So what exactly needs to be swept away? The right to free speech? Freedom of thought?

I am opposed to the policies you describe.

Again...

What needs to be swept away? Again I don't recall a time in American history where homosexuals were exterminated.

I would begin with each one of our own language. It is too easy for some when they want to attack somebody else to immediately acc use them of sexual behaviors that are homosexual in nature. We need to stop that as a cheap shot shortcut to criticizing somebody - particularly when what we are criticizing them for has nothing at all to do with homosexual behavior.

This has nothing to do with what I asked.

The Orlando massacre was an Islamic terrorist attack. How is instead of calling someone gay, calling them stupid going to have any effect on that?

Using the accusation of gay behavior as an attack mechanism to demean another person helps legitimize attacks on gay people which only then creates a climate making those things easier and more accepted. We should stop that beginning with out own behavior and in our own postings.

On what planet?

We should stop that beginning with out own behavior and in our own postings.
That doesn't make any sense. Our behavior had absolutely nothing to do with that.

Earth.

So you don't eleven that human behavior has any effect on other people. Got it.
