Wines from which European countries have you tasted yet?

Somebody else may construct a poll about the rest of the world. :)

Unfortunately the number of options is restricted to 10.

Why?

Headlines can be edited during the period of time (a couple minutes, depending on some save cycle) during which edits to a post will not result in a "Last edited by" display.

I primarily drink Italian wines but keep some French wines on hand. My experience with German wines tends to be more with dessert wines.

The one country left off the list is Portugal and I do like a good tawny every once in a while.

No country has been left out!
Please read the thread from the beginning.
Ten is the limit here.

Sie Sind Deutch?

Yes, I am.
From the Baden region.
Maybe I can find some info in English about wine from my home region.
Just as an info - not as some kind of advert.

I lived in Karlsruhe as a child. My mother liked Liebefraumilch(sp?) My tastes run more to German beer and whiskey from wherever.

I’ll drink Riesling as well......

The missus and I have been to Porto a few times and we always take in at least one tour in one of the distillers. There is a large one that has a very German sounding name. Very near the bridge there that was also designed/built by Eiffel.

So do I - and more! :)

Here is some info now. It will not be new to you, though. :)

Baden is a region (Anbaugebiet) for quality wine in Germany,[1] and is located in the historical region of Baden in southwestern Germany, which today forms part of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. Under German wine legislation, Baden and Württemberg are separate wine regions.

This is something we remember fondly, looking up these hills filled with luscious grapevines. None in particular

From what I can read, this picture shows the "Cannstatter Zuckerle". :)
So I was right when I was reminded of the Neckar River, when first looking at the picture?

It is from the net, I just picked one that closely resembles what I remember.
Now, not to change the topic, but I remember fields of roses. Was that Germany, France...? France has vast fields of lavender, but we might have seen the rose fields there as well.

I lived in Bremerhaven for six years while in the US Army. Traveled all over Europe...even to Yugoslavia (when it still existed). Tasted the wine in every country. (except for E. Berlin...got me a couple bottles of Stoli, though)

I had a lot of fun driving south along the Mosel, stopping at every castle, tasting the wine, buying the wine and buying two wine glasses from each one.

Baden-Baden has fine rose gardens! :)
But rose fields? I guess you saw them in France, then.

Maybe we can also talk about grape varieties?
There are too many to make a poll.
As a poll only accepts 10 options, that is no-where near enough.

@ grape varieties

I name those I like best.
Of course I like others also, but I make a choice now.

WHITE WINE
Riesling
Gewürztraminer
Traminer

RED WINE
Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder)
Merlot
Tempranillo
Cabernet Sauvignon
Pinotage
Carménère

Maybe in the USA you prefer Zinfandl? :2wave:

There is an interesting story behind the Zinfandel:

Local wine-labeling regulations are slowly catching up with the DNA evidence, a process that has been slowed by trade disputes. The European Union recognized Zinfandel as a synonym for Primitivo in January 1999,[35] meaning that Italian Primitivos can be labelled as Zinfandel in the United States and any other country that recognises EU labelling laws.[38] Italian winemakers have taken advantage of these rules and shipped Primitivo wines to the United States labelled as Zinfandels,[14] with the approval of the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau .[39]

As of December 2007, the TTB lists both Zinfandel and Primitivo as approved grape varieties for American wines, but they are not listed as synonyms;
U.S. producers, therefore, must label a wine according to whether it is Zinfandel or Primitivo.

As it seems, all the wine threads are dead now.
Are they doomed to become "necros" - as the term is?

Well, including obscure Malta but not including Portugal with their world-famous Port wine was a blunder; I'm sorry to say (not to forget, their non-Port wines are good too, like Alvarinho, Dão, Douro, vinho verde, etc.). Portugal is a major wine country. Malta isn't.

So, you say there is a limit of ten options. Simple. Include Portugal and delete Malta to open space for Portugal. Malta belongs in the "others" category while Portugal is a major, major wine country.
