Intermittent fasting, high fat diet

I have a friend whose diabetes and high blood pressure have been getting steadily worse over the years. Meds keep increasing but not helping. A1c of 8.6 and the doc wanted to get him on insulin injections.

About 25 years ago I had diabetes; so I greatly reduced carbs ( two small helpings of green carbs per day), went off vegetable oil and started eating more fish and meat. I use only animal fats, or olive oil and red vinegar for dressing on salads. About ten years ago I started doing a 16 hour fast each day. My diabetes eventually disappeared and I'm now more insulin sensitive.

Well, the good news is about a year and a half ago my friend started eating the same way, and he's lost 40 lbs, his blood sugar is under control, and his blood pressure is even getting better. Of course I told him to talk all this over with his doctor as he went along. The doc said well it's working so keep on it. He's off most meds and no insulin injections.

I know everyone is different, but the traditional food pyramid, loaded with carbs like it is, just didn't work for me. And meds are usually a dead end, eventually.

I just thought I'd share this experience with you people.
 
First thing my doctor did the moment I was accepted into the VA Civilian In-house Treatment Initiative was to inform me that not only am I diabetic but that she felt I'd BEEN diabetic for well over fifteen years.

NO DOCTOR I'd ever seen before in the private sector ever noticed, but Dr. Kimball at the Long Beach VA sure did:

"Yes, Mr. Haas, you are diabetic...as of this morning I am diagnosing you as Type 2 diabetic, and your A1C is currently at 7.8, and I am putting you on daily Metformin."

Well, after reading about Metformin's higher risk to senility and that it was maybe rough on the kidneys, I started searching for an alternative, and found Berberine, which NIH seems to think is pretty safe and about as effective as Metformin.
Much better results, if you ask me.

As for weight loss, this time last year yours truly was a true fat slob with a grunt-sack belly, 248 pounds at 5'8".
As of this morning: I am now 209 pounds. I am aiming for 185 which used to be my ideal weight and all muscle but I will be satisfied with 190 or 195. I just have to get under 200 pounds, that IS MY GOAL.

I just stopped eating "my three meals a day" and went back to the eating habits I used to have as a single guy.
Karen and I had gotten so used to making dinner for the kids, but our kids are grown now, they are adults.
So I told Karen, do not feel obligated to be "Mommy making din din every night" because these young adults know how to shop and how to cook for themselves.

And as it turns out, I seem to normally fall into a kind of sixteen hour fast as well, without even really thinking about it.
I also have about one day every ten days where I really don't eat all that day, and that happens subconsciously as well.

By the way, one trick with Berberine is to keep cinnamon capsules handy because about every 3-5 weeks you will want to take a break from the Berberine and substitute with the cinnamon capsules instead, then go back to daily Berberine use after a week on the cinnamon.

Longtime Berberine users say that the week long break from Berberine helps its effectiveness whereas continual use over a long period seems to promote a tolerance reaction that builds up.
You have to work it out yourself. For some it is a week off for every three weeks, for others it's a week off every SIX weeks.
So, somewhere in there is your average cycle, I guess.

Raw Cinnamon works remarkably well...maybe not QUITE as well as Berberine but it IS effective at controlling blood sugar.
You can find the HUGE Cinnamon capsules at a drug store in the vitamin section.

Cutting down on the bread, frys, pizza, doughnuts was the ticket for me. Increasing the fats made me way less hungry.

I'm glad that worked out for you. I wonder why the medical community hasn't embraced fasting and rejected the food pyramid? Now that I look back on it eating the way I do now just makes sense. I now think diabetes is more of a diet problem than a "progressive disease".

It is still a progressive disease in that if one continues, the damage continues.
According to my doctor, diabetes mellitus Type 2 damage is to your pancreas as smoking is to your lungs.
If you quit damaging your pancreas, it may heal but it still has a lot of the damage.

But you're right, it IS very much a sign and byproduct of our crummy diet habits and our sedentary lifestyle.
