Vegetarians might have higher risk of stroke than meat eaters, study says - CNN

Non-meat diets have soared in popularity with many peopleditching beef, pork and chickenin pursuit of health and environmental benefits and concerns about animal welfare.

However, a new study suggests that vegetarians and vegans may be at a higher risk of stroke than their meat-eating counterparts -- although those who don't eat meat have a lower chance of coronary heart disease, according to the new paper, published in the medical journal the BMJ on Wednesday.

"It does seem that the lower risk of coronary heart diseases does exceed the higher risk of stroke, if we look at the absolute numbers," said lead researcher Tammy Tong, a nutritional epidemiologist at the Nuffield Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford.

This is the first study to look at the risk of stroke in vegetarians, said Tong. The research found that vegetarians and vegans had a 20% higher risk of stroke than meat-eaters, particularly hemorrhagic stroke -- caused when blood from an artery begins to bleed into the brain. This translates to 3 more cases of stroke per 1,000 people over 10 years.

Damned if you do and damned if you dont I guess. ;)

And what about vegan people?

Could be that people who know they are high risk for premature death from these things alter their lifestyle to try to prevent them. Happened to a man I know. His dad dropped dead in his 30's from a massive heart attack in front of him so he led the healthiest possible life he could and dropped dead in his early 50's from a massive heart attack.

You can be even more damned. I read a story about a young man who had gone close to blind and deaf because of just eating junk food.

Was it a meatless diet? :2razz:

No one is going to steal your hamburger, man. Calm down.

Huh? Who are you talking to?

You. You're sort of starting to act like MV with these threads, only not as annoying. No one is going to take your meat away, and who cares if someone makes different food choices?

What? Please point out where Im even implying that I'm against vegetarianism? I posted an article and doing tongue in cheek comments.

You may not know this but I do go vegetarian 2-4 days out of the week.

If I've misinterpreted your position, my apologies.

worse, a vegetable free diet (and fruit free diet). It destroyed the nerve ends to his eyes and ears.

I could never stop eating meat, I just love it too much. Dietary habits that are so one sided that they hurt the health of the eater are stupid ways to eat IMHO. I am more careful with red meats, eating chicken a lot more, but who can say now to a nice "speklap"

No. Not at all. You are misinterpreting.

What this shows us is something I have long advocated in ALL of life. Moderation.

Actually you misinterpreted, since my OP was sarcasm.

Better yet than moderation, a varied diet is the most important (and that has to be done in moderation).

Again, you are wrong. I responded to what was written.

I think it best if you simply read my posts and hit the thumbs up button.

I thought moderation implies this. Yes, you are correct.

It's almost like humans are omnivores or something.

Without thinking about it, but hey, thats you.

Nah, I never up vote pretentious people who are legends in their own mind.

And next year there will be another study that contradicts this one.

Eat what you want. Eat how you want. Just leave me be to make my own decisions.

Yep, I reached that decision a long time ago...we ain't gonna get outta here alive...:2razz:

if you moderately just eat fast food and no fruits or vegetables, you will still risk serious health issues.

A basic study of psychology would afford you the understanding that when we perceive others to be pretentious or arrogant, it is generally because we feel inferior.

(essential it's a defense mechanism, "they are not really smarter than I am, they are just arrogant" (pretentious)

Hope this helps!

I won't even bill you. ;)
