Best Kitchen Gadgets / Cooking Appliances

Chinois

Toaster oven

"Mental image" of my appliances used in order of frequency - first one the most, last one the least:

basic coffee machine, toaster, pressure cooker, hand mixer, micro wave, blender, crock pot

appliances that haven't been used in the last 10 years and I think they have to go soon (grin): bread machine, rice cooker, pizza turn table, dry popcorn popper

When I read stuff like that I wonder what I'm missing out on. Don't have and never used a pressure cooker - don't know what to cook in it. Mom didn't use either, ever, and it's basically #1 for you after the obvious coffee maker/toaster/toaster oven. So you're cooking a bunch of dishes unknown to me or in a way completely foreign to me, and I cook a good bit - 4-5 nights a week usually.

Looks like I need to do some reading, to know what I'm missing! :peace

They didn't give you one of these. :2razz:

P-38; there were about a half-dozen in each case of C-Rations, some dated from the 1940’s. (This was in the seventies) Beans and Franks was the favorite and Ham and Lima Beans was the worst ........

Anybody use a food mill? I want to make some fish soup and don’t want to get a crappy tool......

My roommate always got the big tins of creamed chipped beef from his older brother. I'm unsure of how his older brother "procured" them for us. His older brother was a really good guy, but a bit messed up from vietnam.

Target practice. :)

Vitamix does the trick in less time. It never sits in the cabinet, there are always other uses.

They were still being issued in the early 70's. Some fellows claimed they saw them in Iraq 1. Wouldn't surprise me. We picked up a case of hard tack, dated 1891 USN, Subic Bay, from a depot in '68. Not even the SE Asian insects would go near them.

He gave them to us circa 1985, could have been leftovers from the 70s though. We liked them, went good mixed with ramen during our college years. He gave us some of those can openers too. My friend was much younger than his 4 older siblings as they ranged from 16-12 years older. His dad used to call him houdini.

C's were still being made and deployed during the 80's. K's were history, but occasionally a case would show up. We left packages of the hardtack as trail gifts for Charlie. Heard they were very, very binding. Painfully so. :)

Fresh cans of creamed chipped beef can still be had. It was the stuff that made Heinz what it is today. Dates back to the Civil War. The original SOS, ccb on tack.

When my older son's med group was assigned to Afghanistan, my friend Mark who owns a major private jet leasing company, took a head count. Started shipping in meals from NY's finer restaurants on a once per week basis with one of his modified Gulfstream 280's. When one of the special forces units decided to muscle in, Mark assigned two more Gulfstreams to make the run. My son is long back, Mark is still flying his birds to spoil our boys and girls in uniform. He insists on anonymity, he doesn't want people knowing he gets sentimental. He prefers his rep for being an SOB. He is an SOB. He no longer limits the restaurants to NYC, but they must be American.

I love my stainless steel pots and pans. There was a learning curve to cooking with them, but since I have learned the ways, I love them. Just want to get one more nonstick pan , did my own research here Cookwared Reviews . I believe that decent cookware is worth being paid for.
I always liked the nonstick aspect of black cast iron pans. For things that are not suited to cast iron, stainless with a thick aluminum pad, eg All-Clad brand.

I love popcorn and the medic says it's one of the best snacks. A Stir-crazy popper is very handy. They also make an electric version but I'm hands on.
