We basically eat for a lot of reasons - to survive, stayhealthy, have the energy to do things, etc. But have you experienced the urge to eat to feed not your body but your feelings (whether you're happy or sad)?

Emotional eating often leads to overeating that when happens regularly becomes a habit and could lead to an unhealthy lifestyle.

It is essential that we become a mindful eater in order to stay healthy. How to become one? Share your ideas.

Potatoes feed the soul. They are one of my downfalls!

Cut out carbs and processed food. Eat nothing but meat, vegetables, and nuts. No oils or dressings either. Do that and eat as much as you like whenever you are hungry.

Yes, but that is easier said than done! *crunching Doritos*

I have no interest, eating is one of the great joys in life I have found, one that so far has gone the distance.

That's pretty much what I do -- minus the meat. And oils. Oils are good for you, and if you're going low-carb, consider MCT oil (medium chain triglycerides) derived from coconut oil. You can find it in any grocery or on Amazon. It boosts brain function and helps keep you thin and healthy.

Paleo diet? That's unhealthy. Eat a balanced meal (limit fat, sugar, and processed foods) and just watch your portions.

Do one episode of "Naked and Afraid".

End of thread.

Yes, I used to have a very very bad soda drinking problem. Specifically diet soda like Diet Dr. Pepper. I used to drink around 3-4 two liter bottles of soda per day. It was tied to my stress at the time, both work and home. At the time I excused it by saying "Well, I'm not drinking alcohol or eating a lot of food so this is better." Well it wasn't. I went to a nutritional therapist who helped me and I haven't had any soda in nearly 2 years now.

Today is the worst day of the month to ask me about emotional eating. I'll be stuffing my face with chocolate in a couple hours crying over a SPCA commercial. I guess I could go smash some dishes instead.

No.

But, I do find myself over eating when I like what I am eating. Stopping is hard when the food tastes good.

I can relate to that. I dont get fat but my toilet wants to kill me.

When I was on it I felt better than ever and was losing weight fast.

High quality oils are not bad for you, and that generally means real cold pressed olive oil. Nor is good balsamic vinegar. Processed food bad. Better to eat the box and throw away the contents. Nothing healthy was ever passed through a drive in window.

Follow those rules, you'll do fine.

Most people wouldn't know what to look for so I was just keeping it as simple as possible.

my father long ago made the observation that his native upstate south carolina was filled with people who lived to eat instead of eat to live

until a recent visit to montana, i did not realize the significance of geography relative to obesity
in a week there, i saw one obese person and three others who were noticeably outside their weight limit

when i returned home to this land of traffic we call the carolinas, formerly known as G_d's country, i could see dozens of obese people at the airport alone

so, to the OP's question, it is much easier to stay in shape than get in shape. both outcomes require self discipline. get some. but it may be that moving to the rockies, where healthy practices appear to be the norm, might assist your efforts

I find I snack while watching TV at night in that the artificial dramas create artificial stress. Also, since I am supposed to eat something with a pill I take at night, that gives me an excuse to snack. On the other hand, I never eat at the computer. Maybe I should spend more time here at night.

Not supposed to eat before bed, but the past few years I can't stay asleep unless I do. :(

Interesting. I have apple slices and baby carrots for TV watching snack urges. Carrots literally feel like eating nothing though. To my stomach. Apple slices and celery, I guess the fiber content is the key.

It is really very comforting to eat. But emotional eating can really cause us trouble in the long term. We may not feel it at the present but in time we may suffer from all the diseases it may cause us. If you want to stop your emotional eating, but find it hard to do or you seems to procrastinate, maybe it's time to visit a counselor near you or talk to a therapist online who can guide and assist you on how to avoid emotional eating by finding the reason behind it.

Red:
Of course. Emotional eating accounts for pretty much all of my dining out rather than staying home and cooking; moreover, my cooking at home is about one-third to one-half of the time emotionally driven.

Blue:
Commit to being fit, as a lifestyle as well as merely to "look good naked." Once one does that:
  1. Barring some physiological non-outwardly obvious reason (e.g., high cholesterol, lactose intolerance, etc.), there becomes no food item that's "off limits."
  2. One merely needs to and will aptly and consistently adjust one's fitness regimen to burn off the excess nutrients one "emotionally" consumes.
  3. One will, when making food choices, regardless of why one chooses "this or "that," choose foods that align with one's fitness goals and that are emotionally satisfying.
  4. One will think of "diet" as the stuff one eats rather than as an activity and ways of performing it.

Now, if you're asking, "How can one 'have it all' -- eat 'anything,' any and all the time, adhere to no fitness regimen, and remain healthy," well, there's only one accurate answer to that question: There is no way to do so.

As for specific suggestions on how to keep fit, well, I've shared what works for me -- diet and fitness routine -- in a host of threads:

Very well said, especially... Commit to being fit, as a lifestyle as well as merely to "look good naked."

Nope.

I eat when I'm hungry or later than that if I'm in the middle of something. My solution for being said is, errrr.....well....being sad?

(Well, ok, exercise definitely improves mood vastly, among other things. But if there's a good reason for sadness, it's more of a distraction to exercise).
