Putting ketchup on a hot dog is a mortal sin that will send you straight to hell.

Dang! No wonder I got those strange looks!!!

I was introduced to my first hot dog by Americans on a UK military base. Hot dog man was American and he had mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup and some green relish lined up next to the buns.
I wasn't sure what to do with my naked hot dog rolling around in an equally naked bun, so I dressed the bun with mayo on one side and ketchup on the other and squirted some mustard over the hot dog and then doused the whole shebang with some sweet, green relish. I thought it looked good.

Came to the US and discovered that a hot dog can be smothered with sauerkraut and onions and a little mustard ... out went the ketchup, mayo and relish.

I hope the sauerkraut neutralized the mortal sin of having used ketchup.

I'm originally from Chicago... and I am telling you, one could be ostracized by their friends for life if they ordered a red hot (hot dog) with ketchup. I would imagine plenty of people were closet users of ketchup on their dogs peeps though. I know I was until I acquired a mature taste for mustard, relish, onions, chopped tomatoes, and a good slice of a kosher dill pickle, sometime around 18 years old.

What's you take on ketchup on a steak?

My wife puts ketchup on her hash browns....nauseating.

I do that. Ketchup and potatoes goes well together. I used to put ketchup on my mashed potatoes as a kid.

According to my son, ketchup is for everything except Cap' Crunch cereal.

Mods need to be monitoring this thread. I see a lot of warnings and a lock on this one.

Plain simple poll question:
  • Is it acceptable to put ketchup on hotdogs?
    • If "yes," when?

Ketchup on hot dogs is sacrilegious.
Anyone putting ketchup on a hot dog should be jailed.
For a felony.
For many years.

The big Hebrew National hotdogs at Sam's are my favorite just under Brats.
Almost any Brat beats any hotdog.
Del Dixie relish with the brown mustard.

When I cook brats I add onions to the beer in the pan and thus have them handy to add to the brown mustard on the bun.

You Americans are a strange people. Wikipedia says 23% of Americans have ketchup on their hotdogs. What's the big deal?

When I was younger I disliked mustard on my dog enough that I would not buy from the hot dog men in the stands of Wriggly Field ( Hot Dog Men sold em one way, with a line of mustard in em), I would get up out of my seat and go to the concourse stand and wait in line missing the game to get a dog plain so that I could put ketchup and relish on it.

I have not put ketchup on a hot dog in a least 20 years.

MUSTARD IS A MUST

Given that the poll offers only three choices, I chose the answer that most nearly reflects my view, "no," on the matter. That said, there are some ketchups, none of which are the "garden variety," that I wouldn't object to on a hot dog. The recipes below are some examples of the ketchups I don't mind on hot dogs. They are savory rather than sweet and as such, are tailored to a mature palate.

FWIW, to a certain extent, I can kinda understand putting ketchup on the saporific and textural pablum that is a "typical" hot dog -- a basic Ball Park frank, for example. Dogs of that nature need all the help they can get, so I suppose putting ketchup on them is one way to help them out. Even so, if ketchup is going on the dog, it at least needs to be there as an "also ran" rather than as the main sauce or accompanying flavor. The notion of hot dog + ketchup + bun and that's it is flat out "no," even using the "Gucci" ketchups noted above.

25....But, as a high functioning Aspie, I make allowances for his unique viewpoint.

Yes, I too can forbear and/or make a host of accommodations for the "peculiarities" of folks burdened with certain conditions that place them very close to or near the endpoints of ±1σ cognition/behavior (intellectual or emotional, although for this topic, emotional is the relevant scale). Asperger's Syndrome is one such condition. It's the opinions, behaviors and taste buds of folks who are bereft of such things that I had in mind when posing the thread question, but I have no problem with, indeed I welcome, your contributing to the discussion by sharing your son's view on the matter.

Bar S hotdogs with ketchup and mayo for the win baby.

What kind of question is this???

I haven't eaten ketchup with hot dogs since I was a kid. What grown adult would do this? Probably the same people eating pineapple pizza.
