Do you use, or have you ever used, grocery online ordering and home delivery services?

What's your opinion? Were you satisfied with the meats and produce they chose for you? That's my big concern. Other thoughts?

I wouldn't know. I live in Indiana!

I tried out Stop & Shop's "Peapod" service a couple times, thinking that if I worked during the time saved it'd probably be a net gain. Problem was, they'd often give you still-fresh but the oldest meat out, or perhaps a couple of apples were more bruised than one would pick out personally.

It's available in my area but no I would not use it unless I had no way to go to the market myself.

I am picky about my produce. I am one of those people who squeeze the mellons, smell other items for ripeness....I look for cuts of meat with the right amount of marble of fat.....I am a stickler on expiration dates on eggs, dairy etc. I sure as heck don't want a dozen eggs ready to expire before I even had a chance to use them.

Look 45 years ago I couldn't cook. I was happy eating out but then I got married and had kids. I learned out of necessity to cook. And if you asked the clan that grew out of our union they would tell you I turned out to be one heck of a cook.

It is all together another ballpark when you are responsible for the lives of others that involves their nutrition intake period. And no I would not allow another probably a high school student ordered to pick out my produce, meats or anything fresh. If I couldn't find the time to pick it out myself, then my priorities are so screwed up that I wouldn't find time to cook it either.

Hah! Here I though I was the only one that does a cost-benefit analysis of this sort!

I used to like to work on cars a lot, preferring to save money and getting the job done right & exactly how I wanted it. Then I started to do the numbers as to how much I'd save, versus how much I could make by working those same hours.

I quickly found I'm usually better-off working, in terms of financial profit, rather than spinning wrenches on a cold, dirty, garage floor. This particularly came to light one weekend when I spent most of the weekend doing a front-struts job that went terribly sideways, only to later find the price of getting the struts done was far less then I had thought, and that I lost a lot of money by not working my usual Saturday - to say nothing of working Sunday too!

You're my kind of shopper!

I must admit I'm also an inveterate grape taster! I can't imagine buying a bunch, without popping one in my mouth first.

But it's far from pragmatism. I want only good quality food products. End of story! Not necessarily the most expensive, but good quality. We've got a saying in my house, "If it goes in or on our bodies, it must be good".

I'll compromise on some things if I have to, but not what goes in or on our bodies.

Since I moved to the 3rd world, the cost of employing servants is pretty negligible and I used to have a maid to buy the groceries but she never seemed to get the ones I wanted, so now I pretty much buy them myself since the mall is so close to my house.

Yep.

It might be hard for some Westerners to imagine the lifestyle, in terms of domestic assistance, a Western middle-class income can get you in a 3rd world country.

I'm quoting prices from a decade ago, but in the Philippines domestic help from the provinces on the islands outside of Luzon, was going for 30 - 60 bucks USD a month. You supply the food & shelter, and toss-in a large bag of rice for the help's family. The exception is the driver - he's 150 a month. Of course, you need to help with reasonable things that come up though. You can't turn your back on your help.

But the poverty can be absolutely striking. There were a couple instances that really broke my heart.

Like others I don't use it for fresh deli meat, eggs, fruits, veggies. I use it more in the winter times to bulk up on hot food. As a single guy I need to stock up maybe once a month.

I would be very leery of meats, produce, and dairy. Bread, as well. But, if I could get most stuff delivered then just visit the store occasionally and shop the perimeters, I could see some value in that.
