So I went to the deli near my house because I wanted to make some sandwiches for an easy Sunday lunch. The guy manning the slicer wasnt around so I rummaged through the pre-packed stuff and two of the vacuum sealed bags contained about a quarter pound sliced Milanese salami for 7 cents each?!

I knew it couldnt be right since the date on the seal said just the day before, so it had to be fresh.

Figuring it was a mistake but deciding I would give it a go anyway, I bought a loaf of bread and some cheese with it and proceeded to the checkout counter. I was expecting the lady manning the cash register to correct me and say it wasnt the actual price on the label.

To my surprise it went through! Apparently their POS system punched it in so the mistake had to have happened while they were in putting the price during packaging. So now I got half a pound of high quality deli meat for a total of 14 cents!

Now Im feeling guilty though. Should I go back and tell them about it?

Well you want the truth, you should have told them before purchasing it.
That said, I think you know what the answer is.

Myself, I would not feel guilty, they should sell something for the price attached.
When the price scanners first came out, one local store would give you the product free, if the scanned price
did not match the price on the shelve.

So you took advantage of a place you regularly shop at? You should feel guilty. If your karma was as fragile as mine, you would have brought it up at the register.

I agree - and here in Toronto, some stores and large grocers still have this policy. I've frequently challenged a price on an item when their label says one price and the scanner has a higher price - I always get the first product free and any additional items of that product I have I get at the reduced price. Now, I never challenge it when the price scanned is lower than the labelled price.

Bottom line, I'm paying what the store programmed me to pay. It is not my job to price check items for the store. If they want to reduce staff in that area of their business, they can suffer the consequences. Besides, the mark ups on most products are sufficient to cover most such loses and they learn from mistakes.

The best before date on the pack is 2016, I'm amazed they sold it at all!

Around here the law states that if they misprice the prodcut in your favor they have to give it to you at that price, even if the cash register says a different price. Could be same laws in your area as well and you just dont know?
Also seems the date is 27-04-16 so it appears to be a year outta date

I have no idea what the laws here are. The thing is the package price said 7 cents and the scanner said 7 cents as well.

It wasnt just one pack but 2.

Oh and the pic I posted isnt the actual package I bought, its just a representation of it! :2razz:

Glad to hear you didnt waste 14 cents on year old meat :)
If it is the law there as well then that explains that, if not I guess it depends on who is at the cash. The manager/owner might say something but someone making min wage is not likely to cause a big fuss over it

Good thing as the date is the European fashion, where the month is in the middle. Plus Mar 2016, the meat would be a different color!

As to the moral question, when I was younger, I had a different attitude about pricing (if in my favor) and finding lost money. Used to finder's keepers, now I look at situations a little differently. Many years ago I managed to drop a $20 bill in a hardware box store. I returned to the store knowing it was a lost cause, but asked at customer service if anyone had turned in a lost $20. Sure enough, someone did the 'right ' thing. Just when you think you have mankind figured out............

I don't know about your state, but in MA the supermarket must sell the item at the labeled price, even if it's a mistake. (Though, I don't know what else this may or may not apply to. I doubt they'd apply it to auto dealers, but who knows...)

I don't think you should feel a bit guilty. They would have honored that price anyway. I'd probably give them a call though.

I'm kinda jealous.

When I lived in California I was told that it is NOT the law there to honor an obviously incorrect price. Many stores do anyway, though.

Where it has come up in court cases is when people tried to score a vehicle from a dealership for almost nothing because of an add error or omission of a disclaimer. The courts pretty much always ruled on the side of the dealership on those.

Hell no! Waste in all types of retail businesses is sky high. Ever go to Walmart after Christmas at the Return Booth. Watch how they treat everything returned as they throw it buckets or on the floor. In grocery store waste is higher than all other businesses. Meat and produce are thrown to the garbage at alarming if not criminal rates. I was at an HEB store recently and found one chuck roast priced at $42.00 next to the one of the same weight priced at $12.00. I'm certain the company will survive your episode. Also, the next time you are in this store take time to monitor how many items are on the shelves with no price attached on the shelves. Then go ask the manager for the explanation of the "oversight".

You guys are not gonna believe this, but it seems every time I go to that deli there is now at least one mispriced deli meat packet in the basket by the slicer. It takes me a few minutes to rummage through it all but a new one comes out every week.

I just bought a 25 ounce pack of ham bologna for 2 cents.

I would ask where this Deli is but I dont want to horn in on your windfall

Two purchases back to back mistakes. I ordered on bottle of a skin toner and received three. Then I ordered one bar of special soap and received it and two large jars of skin cream. I actually ordered a bottle of medicinal fluid and when I got it the cap was lose and about 10% of the fluid leaked out. I emailed them saying they need to tape the cap on in the future and next received a notice another bottle was shipped to me free.
