Do we all agree that modern corn is a disgrace?

Tiny kernels, not a lot of flavor.....looks good in the store produce section but who cares....

My dad would be disgusted: "I am supposed to go to all that work growing roasting and eating an ear and that's all I get? Who thought this one up?"






Note: I did eat some really good corn three weeks ago out of Fred Meyer, some decent corn can be had sometimes.

Huh. There are farmers markets all over LA where you can find fantastic corn and usually in the big chains (Ralph's, etc...) as well.

I don't know, I haven't gotten snobbish on corn yet, but tomato's became a watered down flavorless disgrace, and they have reversed that pretty well lately.
Add to that the alternative choice of those oblong bite sized ones that taste WOW, and it's pretty good. apples, oranges...some good modern selections have improved IMO.

My wife loves corn, and we eat in off the cob periodically and it's good, but yeah, it's not wow. Is there anywhere you know to get this better corn? I'd be game to try it...serve me up a big helping of first-world food pickiness please!

Well sure bad tomatos got a lot of press, but I dont see the same level of concern over how corn has been wrecked.

Agreed. Commercially mass-produced tomatoes simply aren't worth eating.
 
Explanation: I grew up in Coventry Hills Subdivision Rockford Il. We had a garden or three every year I lived at home (19), according to my dad corn was the most important thing. Dad spent a fair amount of time in the seed catalogs most years, depending upon how the last year went. One year the root grubs ate most everything in spite of efforts..that variety got replaced and that year we made more trips than usual to the farmer next door who each day in season put a farm cart of corn out by the road along with a can to put the money it, 5 cents an ear is the first price I remember. Mom froze 40-50 meals worth every year, because the family loved our corn you see.

I'm not sure what you think qualifies as a 'tiny' kernel. To me, they're as large as they've ever been and really quite good, so it's never really been an issue.

HAWKEYE'S TEST:

If it takes more than three bites to completely jam pack your mouth with corn then it is small kernel.
 
Our farmers market corn has been great and we have been making some really awesome Mexican Street Corn and grilled corn with butter and seasonings in foil. Its actually been a good year for produce for us.

I don't think I have ever bought corn at the store. I've got too many cousins in farming that bring a paper grocery bag by every now and again. Always great. Hawkeye if you get used to the fresh, fresh corn straight off the stalk, store bought pales by comparison.

I am the guy who was eating it an hour out of my garden at probably 2 years old.

The problem is the genetics....and why producers decided that Americans want corn on the cob to be niblet corn..... I want BIG CORN.

I'm not a big tomato eater, but people who are tell me their own garden tomatoes have much more flavor than what you can get in the store.

As far as sweet corn goes, I have better luck from farmer's markets and roadside trucks here in Iowa. Stores are iffy. Still, the BEST sweet corn I have ever had consistently came from northern California near Brentwood. It was awesome... but much of the farmland has been subdivided and developed so I don't know how much of an industry it is anymore. I haven't been back in about 10 years.
 
Living in Nebraska, I have no shortage of really good corn. Probably the best I get right now is from a little stand set up on a corner lot. It's huge, sweet, and juicy - just the way I like it. I know what you mean about the niblets but I rarely get those.
 
I grow sweet corn in my garden, and what doesn't get eaten by critters is always a real treat. I sometimes buy it at the grocery store, but I prefer it from my garden or from a roadside stand.
 
Hey OP...are you sure you arent just getting the wrong kind of corn?

I think I see the problem...Washington State grows a lot of corn for canning and freezing, which tended to go to nibblets over time, and they pull some of that for the supermarkets and road stands.....except Fred Meyer produce has been awesome these last few years, they go to the extra work to get the good stuff.

This is a theory, but I am getting confident that I have figured this out.
