What is a Patty Melt?

Saw this on the menu at a restaurant I tried a couple weeks ago.

Maybe it's just me, but I thought grilled onions was standard on a patty melt. Rye bread, too, really. :shrug:

I will note that this restaurant added extra charges for everything. This was only the sandwich. Fries were extra. Breakfasts did not come with potatoes, those were extra. If you ordered ham & eggs, you got ham & eggs (and toast).
 
A patty melt is basically a cheeseburger on regular bread instead of a bun.
 
It's a patty.




But melted.
 
Hamburger/cheeseburger but with bread, preferably rye, always with grilled onions, hopefully at a good Jewish deli.

NEVER with lettuce or most of the other trappings of a traditional burger.
 
To me, a patty melt is burger on almost any bread other than a bun. I've seen them on challa, rye, Texas toast, etc. Mushrooms are also key. Onions have been made optional, because there so many crazies out there that don't like them.

Other key thing is the cheese...can't be American. Gotta be Swiss, or sometime provolone.

I worked at a bar and grill a long time ago and the patty melt was hamburger with swiss cheese and grilled onions on rye. You could also add grilled onions for free to anything.

I hate those restaurants that charge for any little thing extra, I'm too cheap to go to those. I had to leave a place a couple weeks ago because we always share a plate and they wanted to charge us to share. This wasn't even a buffet or anything, we wanted to order a dinner and share it, which we always do and never have any other place charge us. So yeah, we walked out and told them we were going to their competition.

On rye with grilled onions what it is is delicious!

Onions are freaking cheap! Any restaurant that charges extra for onions is just nickle-and-diming, price gouging. And that's what really put me off, the feeling of being nickle-and-dimed to death.

Now, I will also add that this place had a seriously large senior citizen clientele, and maybe they like that. This pricing tactics does seem to be more common in places that caters to seniors. But, it's not for me.

I will say that I often use sourdough bread when I make them. I love a good sourdough. I'm not real hip on rye, though it's ok. But, I do not delude myself into thinking it is a patty melt. It doesn't have rye bread. What I make is a sourdough melt.

Your sandwich with the sourdough bread sounds like a Frisco Melt, two steakburgers with American and Swiss cheese and Frisco sauce grilled on buttered sourdough bread,

Onions and Rye are standard for a Patty Melt. If you've got a burger served on "bread of your choice" it's called.....not a Patty Melt.
 
It is not a melt without cheese and dont be charging me extra for rye bread cause rye bread does not cost more than other breads.
 
Its essentially a burger cooked like a grilled cheese sandwich. I like tuna melts myself.

My gut doesn't like them, but it's a small price to pay, I tell myself as I tuck in anyway, only to regret it at 3am!

They still do, at least around here. It would be very good if they'd take the time to grill it properly, but everything is rush-rush and the bread is not grilled long enough. It ends up kind of limp and undercooked.

There was a small chain in SC called The Clock that had one that was pretty good. It was kind of a cross between a diner and a fast food place. Not a bad place, but I don't know if they're still around.
