Ive noticed that there are American style sandwiches (which means that in addition to the bread and meat, there is other stuff like veggies like lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, peppers, etc. and condiments like ketchup, oil vinegar, mustard, relish etc.) while in most other places Ive noticed that their sandwich is pretty much just the meat and the bread itself- nothing else on it.

I ordered a roast pork sandwich in Italy and got just the pork and bread. Ive had a pork bun in Macao which is just a porkchop on bread. These other sandwiches still taste good but I cant help but think there's something missing when I eat them. What do you think?

Good afternoon, PoS. :2wave:

You made a good point by showing the difference in sandwich styles! Photo one is what most people, including me, would order, because just looks like it would taste better!

I didn't even know there was an "American style" to sandwiches. But I like it because it's like having an entire chicken salad in the form of a sandwich. That's really convenient.

I don't know where you got the impression that bread and meat alone is the most popular sandwich outside of America. There are many German sandwiches that feature plenty of added ingredients.

EDIT: I have to admit that most German sandwiches are served open faced and are intended to be eaten with utensils - but they are (generally) more than just meat on bread. I have many neighbors of German ancestry, and a brother born there, that could discuss the matter in German with you. ;)

an instance of American exceptionalism

I like variety but generally I am not a fan of Iceberg and tomato on a sandwich in America, because they are fillers that add very little quality. A richer green and a decent tomato would be fine though. American sandwiches went South when we cut back on the fat. When I was a young spout in the 60's it was still common to butter the inside of at lest one slice with butter (and I maintain that butter used to be better generally), but we cut that out in the 70's, in the 90's we started to massively cut back on the mayo too.

Meat+spice and/or sauce on bread alone can be very nice.

Italy sucks compared to a good New York City Deli.

Had a nephew that would say "I don't want SALAD on my sandwich!" Maybe he'd like the bread/meat.

I like both types, but I would think at least one sauce/dressing would be needed.

A good bbq sandwich, I don't want anything on it really, I don't even like pickles with it usually. But has to have the sauce.
Same with a roast beef sandwich, like mayo/cheese, that's it.

Tacos and burritos can be similar right? Occasionally they are best with just meat/sauce, but often they are served fully dressed.

i don't know if it's specifically an American thing, but i like a lot of veggies and other stuff on my sandwiches most of the time.

The first meal we had in England I literally thought I was going to throw up. My kids 'sandwich' was a bland piece of bread (not uncommon...some of their bread has NO flavor) a slice of ham, and a slice of canned pineapple. At a restaurant. NOT at all thrilled. However...

Pub sandwiches in the UK are fricken awesome. There is a good variety of what qualifies as a ploughmans sandwich for instance...top notch.

When I think of Euro style sandwiches. I think open-faced on high-fiber bread.

An open faced sandwich ... isnt really a sandwich. They're more like large canapes. I've had those when I went to Scandinavia, the Danes call them smorebrod, The Swedes call them smorgas.

I dont speak German either- well, maybe just the cussing words. ;)
