Supermarket Corn Beef, not cooked, in a bag with spices, most of us who eat it probably cook only once or twice a year including today........ I LOVE IRELAND DAY......

It's not just me right......most of the flavor is gone.......right?

Low everything...... low salt, the pickling spice pack is a joke, not much and what happened to the other 5 spices that used to be in there I need to know.

I was so disappointed.

What Say You?

Have you noticed?

Do you have an opinion on what has been done to what used to be a pretty decent thing to eat a few times a year???

Find your local deli which has Bore's Head products and select either of these.

1st Cut Cooked Corned Beef Briske

or this

Cap-Off Cooked Top Round Corned Beef
detail-001@800.1479915292.jpg

If either tastes like the flavor is gone, something is wrong with your taste buds.

For me, the local deli that stocks Bore's Head is Kroger and the choice is Cap-Off Top Round Pastrami.

Had it not a month ago....$18.00/LB .....and it is not even corned beef, it is peppered roast beef.

Very good peppered roast beef.

But that is not the point.

As I said, "for me". That was my selection.

As the flavor profile is that of Pastrami (brined and smoked) I do not get the Pepper Roast beef thing you apparently do.

The same would go for the similar Corned Beef cut. It would have the flavor profile of regular corned beef.

That said.
$18.00/LB? Ouch! It varies here between a Sales Price and $11.98.

Regardless of what my preferred choice is, back to Corned Beef.
Was that the brand of Corned Beef you had? I hope not.
If not, I hope you can get some.

Can't recall ever trying that.

I hope you get something to your liking and it is not your taste buds.

I expect that someone still makes it right but this idiotic low salt fad is negatively impacting my life.

Thanks for the reminder. I haven't had corned beef in some time. 'Must see, if I can find a butcher around here that carries it. Maybe the British supermarket.

Okay. I see where things got me confused.
You spoke to corn beef but quoted the image of my selection, Top Round Pastrami.

But no. The first image was of Corned beef brisket. That also is not peppered Roast Beef.

Bore's Head, while expensive, has good flavor, so I do not know what else to tell you.
Try making your own?

Hummel brothers. their corned beef brisket is the best.

Last time I have bought or eaten corned beef was 4 years ago when I bought 20lb wholes for the restaurant from Sysco. They were fine, but this low salt kick has been on for only the last few years. Manufacturers are on a program to reformulate products with a goal to massively cut the salt, over a 5 or 6 year period, hoping that we dont mind and that this finally satisfies the food Nazi's.

I do, and it wont, nothing ever does.

Love, love, loooooove corned beef and cabbage. :)

Funny thing the irish never really ate cornned beef or any beef until immigrating to america. Over there they ate sheep/mutton or pork. All of their beef was for a long time exported to mainland england as salt beef aka corned beef, which was used by the british army and navy due to how well beef preserved, especially after canning, and as a delicacy for british elite.

It became popular with irish immigrants in america due to jewish delis serving corned beef made from brisket. The irish could not afford beef in their homeland, so coming to america with beef being reasonable in price, it became a status symbol with the irish.

If you want true corned beef you are going to have to make it, or buy the stuff in a can which is corned beef but made of leftovers. Store stuff is not real salted/corned beef since it is designed with refrigeration in mind, oldschool corned beef was made to be preserved for months without refrigeration.

I'm part Irish, but I will admit that Jewish delis make the best corned beef.

I HEAR YA.

We have a nice Irish pub in town that does a good corned beef but I usually skip it for their shepherds pie. I used to cook one myself but figured 1-its too much work for a meat I dont really love and 2-I aint Irish...so why bother?

I had lunch Friday at an Irish bar but skipped the corned beef because the last time I ordered it, it was like shoe leather. In my own experience, the only way to cook corned beef is for hours and hours and HOURS. This is the first year I haven't made it; in between the ridiculous price for a brisket and the time, I said phooey this year.

Don't opt for cheap corned beef. Boars Head is as good as any. As far as sodium goes boiling removes sodium from meat but we always use the juice to pour over the potatoes and cabbage so..... Once a year is enough for me.

When the meat is low flavor then so is the water, and so are the veggies I cooked in the water. I ended up reducing a bunch of the water and pouring it over everything. Sorta worked, but if I ever do this again I am adding spices and salt at the fount end.

About those little spice packets--does anybody assemble those spices at home?
