Is it "smug" to pronounce "chorizo," "croissant" and "latte" correctly?

Re: Is it "smug" to pronounce "chorizo," "croissant" and "latte" correctly?

The Daily Mail reports on a Mumsnet argument on whether pronouncing foreign foods' names correctly is "pretentious." I don't think so. Is "latte" really that hard? Woman provokes Mumsnet debate over chorizo pronunciation | Daily Mail Online

But it's "wok-a-mole-eh" and "hala-pain-yo."

I pronounce chorizo correctly because I shop in a market where most of the patrons and the entire staff are native spanish speakers and if I pronounce like a gringo they laugh at me.

James Michener, 'Texas'. Should be required reading in Texas schools. Good read. He starts his subjects right at the distant beginnings.

My mother was quite the fan. I was always agog at how lengthy his books were.

Sorry, "pain" is simply not how it's pronounced. Though to be fair, "pen" is not entirely correct either. The p is pronounced in more of a muted way. But there definitely is no long a sound in the word jalapeno. Yes I know, no tilde, not going to dig up a special keyboard just to write the word jalapeno LOL.

I didn't either; I just typed it into Word and pasted it here. And the tilde is what matters. I love Spanish--so long as you know the vowels, you can spell just about anything, and so long as you understand the double "l" and tilde and how "g" and "j" are pronounced, you're in business.

When she was a kid, one of my little sisters really did think that "The Star-Spangled Banner" began with, "Jose, can you see?" (I love mondegreens.)

You mean it's not "Jose can you see"?

As they should.

Good idea. Another way is to Google and copy and paste.

Long is right. His book 'Hawaii' starts with eruptions on the ocean floor that become volcanoes.
Another good one is 'Sports in America'. He wrote well on the subject of Spain and bullfighting too, managed it without looking like he was imitating Hemingway, but lots of people won't read a word on the subjest of the bulls.

Yes, Hawaii was the book I was thinking of. I did begin it but then abandoned it. My mother turned me on to Robert Ludlum, and that's my genre, so that was that.

I pronounce most of those correctly because I hablo some Espanol, and also I want to make sure the waiter gets my order right....

... and only someone from the south of Spain (tmk) would pronounce it "koritho" just like they say "a la platha" instead of "plaza", it is a regional dialect.

When I spent time in El Salvador, that "th" lisp marked someone originally from Spain, and I was told that this was Castilian.

When I was taking advanced Espanol in HS we regularly watched a Spanish soap opera for immersion. It was set in Castille and they all talked like that. Our teacher warned us if we started saying "th" for "z" in class she'd cut off our TV show. :)

Irony rules for humble quinoa (which is the Spanish spelling of a South American Quecha word kinua) Phonetically that's Kee-noo-ah. The Spanish derivation sounds kee-no-ah. Trendy foodies and bloggers anglicised the Spanish pronunciation into Keen-wah! At least one UK TV chef called it "kwin-o-ah" for quite a while!

It can be, but not always. You can usually tell by the person's tone, not the pronunciation itself.

Re: Is it "smug" to pronounce "chorizo," "croissant" and "latte" correctly?

Its bothersome to me that Brits pronounce tomato as to-mah-to, when it should be pronounced properly as to-may-to.

Then why do you all pronounce it to-may-doh???

I don't know how it's done in Oceania but it's always bothered me how Americans pronounce herb 'erb'.

I can handle that. What I can't handle is how they pronounce zero. It's zeee-row. Not that hard. Not zed.

Do you mean 'z'??

What drives me crazy is "hala-peeno." Arrgh. But sometimes I say "jop-a-leena" just for fun.

Dee di deee. Yeah. Z. I was thinking about the show Top Gear when I typed it, and how much I hate it when they drove a vette ZO6. They called it zed aught 6.

Every other English speaking country uses zed. Pretty sure Americans changed it that way so that the ABC song would rhyme

Meh, to each his own. But one thing that annoys the heck out of me is when I go to Starbucks and order a large coffee and the cashier says, "grande?" Nope, large please.

Also Catalonian, I believe. They'll pronounce it "Barthelona" when you're there...
