Didn't Butter used to Taste Better

It seemed to taste so "clean" now, stripped of flavor, and now also so often tragically and unnecessarily so stripped of salt as well. I think so and I have some theories:

1) the cows

2) what they eat

3) food safety rules at the plant

4) the milk is chilled to fast and/or too cold

5) Done on purpose by the manufacturer because they think this is what we want. Might have something to do with needing to taste clean to get graded class A by the government.


What say you?

I had some on some Corn a couple weeks ago and thought the same thing.
 
Depends on the brand you buy. I am totally into French butter now. You can also make your own homemade garlic butter. Just put a few cloves in the oven with a little olive oil until they are soft to squeeze out and mash them into a softened stick of butter.

Go buy some raw un-homogenized milk, skim the cream, churn it into butter and have it just the way you want.

I bought some Irish butter a couple of years ago. It cost three times as much as 'Murican butter, so I figured it should taste three times as good. It didn't. Nice texture though. Personally, I think domestic cows are pissed about something. Is there still an ongoing boycott of Chic-Fil-A? That could be it.
 
About 7 years ago I was eating out and the butter tasted really really good, like it used to. Turns out that it was organic from a boutique dairy. This is one of my arguments that butter used to taste better.
 
Land O Lakes tastes the same to me.

Tomatoes on the other hand are bull**** these days.

I was also a bit disappointed in the Irish butter. OKay flavor, but I guess I expected something 'more' for that price. The label says grass fed cows, so maybe that is where the difference is... now it seems like people hay the cows, and let them field indiscriminately so who knows what all they have eaten, which definitely has an effect on the milk.

I really dont get it this Irish Butter thing....they over salt it to keep the shelf life long I assume, there might be some good butter there, but how can we know?

Have you tried Amish butter? You buy it in big blocks, it has relatively good flavor.

but you can make butter in a food processor

Steps
Warm the heavy cream to room temperature. ...
Prepare the food processor. ...
Place the cream in the bowl of the food processor. ...
If you like your butter salty, add salt to taste. ...
Turn on the food processor to churn the butter, preferably at low speed. ...
Drain the buttermilk. ...
Squeeze any remaining buttermilk from the butter.

Irish butter? Why would anybody buy that? I'm part Irish on my mother's side, but even I would admit that the food from there ain't great. If you want good butter go French or Belgian.

The Kerrygold was the Irish butter I was referring to. Pleasant, but I expected better.

The butter you would make at home, is only as good as the cream. Back to the same problem....

The food may not be great, but they have lots of coos with lots of grass to eat. If you don't try it, you'll never know if you would like it.

I've seen Belgian butter, but it's even more expensive than the Irish butter. I'll have to give in at some point, and test it....

Yeah - my experience as well. Grass fed cattle is all the rage just now. If you take a look at most pasture for cattle, it isn't all grass, and cattle will eat a wide variety of assorted weeds and other stuff. My horse pastures adjoin some cattle pastures. The difference is striking.
