The author, Michael Graziano a psychologist lost 50 lbs. in 8 months. Here is a capsule of some of what he presents.
Whatever else it is hunger is a motivational state of mind. Hunger is a process that is always present, always running in the background only occasionally rising in to consciousness. It is more like a mood. When it slowly rises or eases back down, even when it's beneath consciousness, it alters our decisions. It warps our priorities and our emotional investment in long-term goals. It even changes our perceptions-often quiet profoundly.
If you are full a piece of food appears larger than when you are hungry. When the hunger mood rises you feel thinner and can then indulge in more food hurting your plan Most calories are done through snacking but studies show most deny snacking. The hunger mood is hard to control because it operates outside the conscious.
Exercising can be harmful when you tell yourself you deserve to relax for the rest of the day therefore burning fewer calories than an average active day. The exercise affects your weight guilt so your emotional commitment to your cause dwindles.
What is will power? It is putting long-term goals against short-term rewards and you are going to fall off the wagon sooner or later. Every time you fall off you do more damage than when you get back on the wagon. And even when you feel you are firmly back on the wagon most of the psychological complexity runs under the surface of consciousness, and therefore you can't possibly recognize how much you are sabotaging your own efforts.
A recent study showed if you are obese your chances of getting back to normal are less than one in one hundred. More than two-thirds of Americans are overweight and more than one-third are obese.
