foods that remind us of our childhood

I think the last time I tried some was at 2AM in a college apartment about 30 years ago. Yeah---not the same at all.
 
I loved these as a kid. Now? I cannot stand them.

Grandma's waffles with homemade chokecherry syrup.
 
Mmmm pizza rolls.

I absolutely loved those when I was about 12. I believe I would gag if I tried to gobble some down now.
 
For the most part, a whole bunch of garbage I don't eat anymore....




BUT, Empire Kosher quartered chicken, w/ spices added to "Bag and Bake": reminds me of my grandma's chicken.

Simple but too good.
 
White Castle hamburgers, Maypo for breakfast, incredible custard filled chocolate eclairs from our little bakery and chocolate malts from our little corner drug store. Small town USA.
 
Probably an easier answer for me to give is what doesn't remind me of my childhood: fancy cooking, anything that required elaborate techniques and had delicate/subtle flavors.

To answer the question asked, however, mostly dishes that were part of the regular rotation for daily meals and/or dinner parties my folks hosted:

  • Fried or baked whole fish -- perch, rockfish, mackerel, porgies

  • Oatmeal w/fruit and brown sugar
  • Boulliabase
  • Hardshell crabs

  • Lobster -- steamed or stuffed with crab
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Mincemeat pie w/hard sauce
  • Bourbon or rum soaked fruit cake
  • Rum cake
  • Pecan pie
  • Creme brulee
  • Homemade eggnog
  • Orange sherbet
  • Skillet hamburgers
  • Sauteed cabbage and Brussels sprouts
  • Fondue
  • Cold cut sandwiches

  • Roasts -- beef, pork, chicken, and lamb

  • Pâté -- various kinds, but usually goose

  • Coleslaw w/tarragon
  • Karo syrup on anything we kids didn't like
  • Chicken salad sandwiches with grapes or raisins
  • Tuna salad or tuna salad sandwiches
  • Buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy
  • PB&J sandwiches
  • Homemade jams -- peach, persimmon, blackberry, strawberry
  • Chutney
  • Homemade relishes and pickles
  • Homemade hard candy
  • Pokeweed
  • Fried chicken without the flour coating
  • Sugar Pops cereal
  • Sugar Smacks cereal
  • Hawaiian Punch
  • Sweet tea -- sometimes regular and sometimes Earl Grey
  • Koolaid
  • Boiled peanuts
  • Underwood chicken spread
  • Fried green tomatoes
  • Fresh bread (the smell of it baking is more what I remember)
  • Popcorn popped in the fireplace
 
Every so often we'd go on a Sunday drive after Church...usually out to the Oregon woods. On the way back we'd stop for some of this:

After more than 60 years, drinking root beer makes me think of those drives. Four kids in the back seat of the station wagon, Mom and Dad up front, Dad driving. Singing, laughing...not a care in the world.
