Christmas time is usually when I buy lots of finger foods and just keep them ready in case anybody decides to stop by. I sort of got this from my grandmother, who always kept a large ham, roasted chestnuts, cold cuts, cheese, nuts, candy canes (for the kids) and pies within easy reach at her house during the holidays.

So today I bought canned sardines in oil, salami, edam cheese ball and herb cheese spreads, assorted wheat crackers, a blueberry cheesecake, canned smoked oysters and eel, a large bag of pistachios, walnuts, trail mix and jarred olives which I'll be laying around soon.

Anybody else do this?

I usually get a summer sausage sampler with cheeses and then also pick some some capocollo, prosciutto, provolone and mozzarella

we are going to make some chex mix this year, which is one of my favorites. i also like to make peanut butter fudge and / or chocolate brownies with mint icing. here's another one that i learned from my GF :

Bird's Nest cookies :

bag of chocolate chips
bag of butterscotch chips
container of chow mein noodles

you melt the chocolate / butterscotch chips in a saucepan over medium heat, and then stir in the noodles. after that, put spoonfuls of the mix on a pan, and refrigerate overnight. the result is pretty awesome.

Greetings, Helix. :2wave:

I make large amounts of Chex Mix - not quite bathtub-filling size, but close to it :lamo *LOVE that stuff * and it gets gobbled up by everyone who visits! I'm going to try your gf's recipe as soon as I get back from the store to buy the chow mein noodles, which I don't have. Something sweet to offer visitors, too, which sounds like a great idea! Thanks! :kissy:

i think i'm right on the amounts; i know it's equal parts chocolate and butterscotch chips (getting that melted was my job,) and i think that we put most of a container of chow mien noodles. i would just add chow mien until they look pretty crunchy / good ratio with the melted chocolate. also, i forgot one ingredient : we also add cashew halves; a handful or so.

My grandmother always made those for Easter. With 2-3 jelly bean "eggs" in each one.

i saw a picture of that variety when i was doing a google search. we might try that modification for this Easter; possibly with jelly beans or chocolate mini eggs.

I don't know if its just because my Grandfather loved shrimp but Christmas eve was snack time of assorted meats and cheeses and shrimp cocktail.

Are those noodles cooked or uncooked before you add them in?

On a side note: my Aunt's care package came in! Almond and egg turron from Barcelona, Portuguese sardines, pulvorones, mantecado cookies, candy coated almonds, and a bottle of cream sherry. Mmm, she never fails to send me this every Christmas.

uncooked. they're added for crunch and to hold the whole thing together.

score! that's a nice care package.
