Wisconsin Public Radio reports that alternatives to dairy milk, which include almond milk, soy milk and rice milk, are becoming more popular for various reasons.

Madison's Willy Street Co-op grocery category manager Dean Kallas attributes the growing popularity to dairy allergies, vegetarians, vegans and people who generally don't want to drink dairy.

The Diary industry has been hit with volatile milk prices, and volatile feed pricing which both effect dairy farmers.

Annual growth is still at a positive 1.3% annually, which is not bad considering the radical price fluctuations in the market recently.

The dairy industry has increased hiring of outside non-family help recently, and have been making improvements in herd health and upgrading equipment to ensure enhanced product safety.

There also has been a strong movement to more organic farming practices and increased social responsibility by owners.

All of these are positive.

US milk production is not hurting at all.

As usual, the thread headline if far from the truth and based only on wishful thinking rather than fact, and is devoid of any serious research.

Good work.

people can see for themselves. Every time you go to the store there are more and varied milk alternatives from plant based sources.
I love Cashew, Almond and Hemp milk.

To think this thread is about "hurting industry" would be foolish. It's about the market driving and GETTING alternatives to animal products and being good themselves, to animals and to the planet.

I don't think it's ethical to alter the title of the original article. Try some cashew milk sometime if you haven't already done so! Cheers!

The OP heading is still a lie.

The dairy industry is doing fine.

Got news for you, the milk industry (aka: Dairy Farming) has been struggling since the late 60's early 70's. It's struggling no more than it ever has.... and lets not kid ourselves. Almonds and Hemp have no titties, therefore it's not milk.....

NSFW - due to language::

My entire family drinks Silk, I drink no milk or milk substitute.

The essence of your article is in the correlation that new alternatives are growing while the dairy industry is suffering. Which it frankly is in a lot of places, but because of competition from commercial dairy farming not this.

Milk alternatives can suck my ass.

Almond milk is just a concoction of chemicals, soy milk is ****, rice milk likely the same. People sitting around pretending they're eating something else. If you want something else, eat the something else. But the fake stuff is never as good as the real stuff, and there's no point trying to masquerade vegetables and such as things they are not.

Yup, it's marketing - they are crappy juice, not milk.

Home-made almond milk is actually devoid of many nutrients. Why? Because it’s mainly water. The bulk of the almonds used to make the drink are discarded and never make it into the drink. Let’s do the maths: one cup of almonds (around 100g), which contains around 21g of protein, 350mg of calcium, 705mg potassium, 0mg vitamin D and 0mg vitamin A, is used to make four 250ml cups of the popular nut milk. No studies have looked into exactly how much of the calcium, potassium and protein make it into the liquid and how much stays in the almond pulp that is thrown away, but it’s estimated that less than a quarter of the almonds’ nutrients seep out into the water during blending. So, that’s a grand total of a paltry 1.25g of protein, 21mg of calcium and 44mg of potassium per 250ml glass of almond milk.
This lack of nutrients in the home-made version of the so-called health drink is the reason shop-bought versions of the dairy-free drink are usually fortified with calcium and vitamin D – to make it nutritionally similar to cows’ milk.

why do you act threatened if others improve their health? odd.

yes I am not surprised that their sales have fallen when one has so many choices

have you tried the coconut/almond combo....very nice

the nut milks are all quite good when they don't sweeten them

the milk industry has recently begun to fight back by downing almond milk and pushing their protein value...while I am not a big milk drinker as I used to be lactose intolerant, I still have to have dairy milk in my coffee and tea, can't wean myself off regardless but I doubt I have ever had a whole glass of milk in my life...won't ever either...it's revolting

what do we have? look at the list of ingredients, gums of all "flavors" (lol) and all the additives to make it "healthy". And only one publishes an almond amount, and that was 2% lol. You know what's in milk? Milk.

If you want almonds...eat almonds. You'll get way more of the almond and much better nutrition than soaking it in a brine of chemicals and additives. This is how I know your side is full of it, you have to run around pretending you still have everything you gave up. Veggie burgers and almond milk and soy fake madeup crap. If you have to dress something up and something else, chances are your body just wants the something else. As an omnivore, I don't have to make believe with my food, there's no prancing around pretending a block of soy and beans is a hamburger or that almonds somehow make milk (when it's in fact just colored water with a ton of other things added to it).

All natural, as nature intended. That's the way to go. But keep drinking that water, telling yourself it's "milk", lol.

I already told you, all natural consists of almonds and water. This shouldn't be upsetting you this much.
