Roman gladiators ate a vegetarian diet -[W-46]

My neighbors would freak out if I ran up and down the road in a loin cloth with a sword.

I'm sure the sword wouldn't have anything to do with it.

So much for the myth of needing meating to be an athlete.

Roman gladiators ate a vegetarian diet - and washed it down with a 'sports drink' of plant ashes and vinegar

Findings from a gladiator cemetery?? If they were dead, wouldn't that mean that they were the losers. So the losers were all vegetarians?? Doesn't speak well of a vegetarian diet. Maybe if they had eaten some more meat they may have been winners and would have been buried with the citizens when they earned their freedom, instead of in a gladiators cemetery with the rest of the vegetarian losers.

Grains and legumes are cheap, copious and easy to store for long amounts of time. I guarantee they were the staple of slaves and peasants in any agricultural society.

And they were very overweight and out of shape.

Left that unhealthy part out, didn't you? :lamo

Ancient Worlds News - Roman gladiators were fat vegetarians - 05/04/2004

they were slaves and weren't allowed to eat meat if I am not wrong

That is exactly correct.

Social status also played a part - 30% of Romans were poor, and ate no meat because they could only afford millet.

The rich dined constantly on meat.

The OP also left this information out while painting an untrue picture.

Surprise: Gladiators Were Vegetarians
A huge factor in a gladiator's physical fitness was a meatless diet. During training, he primarily ate beans for protein and barley for carbohydrates. (2:32)

Yes... because meat was expensive and not something you came across regularly. We are talking about people living at a time where villages were the amount of livestock in a place factored in on whether or not it should be attacked.

Why is this news?

I also posted the elite legionaries ate the same diet. an inconvenient truth I see.

It is not news - it is the OP's sleazy posting attempt to legitimize vegan eating, which is untrue.

The truth is that historical vegans were the result of being poor, period.

The OP's posts are always heavily skewed and usually untruthful.

Yes, because meat was expensive. "Elite legionnaire" sounds like a cool title until you realize that these guys were also raging alcoholics who had to travel long distances. You make a choice between liquor, meat and protein rich foods. It's literally the same logic we used for American soldiers up to 100 years ago.

Meat has the problem of rotting if not properly cured. People as a result used what today would essentially be canned foods (you know bean rations). Cheaply produced meat is a relatively new thing in history and it still takes an immense amount of labor. People 1000 years ago ate beans, but they were also smaller than the modern man. As a species, there is no bigger evidence of evolution than the fact that we are physiologically larger and taller than our forefathers.

Again, this isn't news to ANYONE who understands food. Why do I have to explain it to you?

Because all of his posts are rooted in lies and half-truths.

The OP is only capable of posting warped opinions devoid of fact or reason.

Unless you show credible proof, just another post of lies.

It's like he thought. Oh! What's the modern equivalent of a gladiator! A basketball player! Only it isn't. Gladiators were obviously athletes in the sense that they were more or less involved in a horribly bloody sport that many survived. However, we wouldn't accept the premise that we can adopt their diet (an essential component of their health) for the same reason we'd dismiss adopting any other aspect of their time... like say... healthcare. I'd take a damn needle with good old Western medicine than a few mashed up leaves and shrubs any day.

We simply aren't the same as them anymore. Connor McGregor has a team of doctors looking out for his health, measuring him, ensuring he's in top shape. Maximus had Ateos. His bunk buddy and battle soulmate who he once ****ed at a party, but can't anymore because you know, the stab wound he took to the neck in the morning.

Again, these people aren't even in the same contexts of health much less the same planet. Why go through the trouble of comparing them?

Desperation and bull****.

Denver Nuggets Wilson Chandler vegan diet, injuries | SI.com

“My recovery time is faster, I’m in a better mood, I feel more explosive on the court and I’m leaner,” he says.

Nancy Clark, sports nutritionist and author of Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook, believes that while hard science on the topic is still lacking, athletes like Chandler can serve as an example for others.

“Basketball players get beaten up all the time and they need to know how diet can influence recovery, inflammation and injuries,” she says.

Snort!

If there was any true value all NBA players would be vegans.

But they are not!

Busted again.

you have a vivid imagination. Veganism is a healthy trend and it's gaining not diminishing. You seem personally threatened by the notion.

Looks like you were unable to find any proof of reduced heart disease, just as I suspected.

Yet another untrue post.

Trends are based upon popularity.

Hey, you are conflating veganism can provide an alternative to some athletes - however it is not inherently unhealthy for them to eat meat. We simply aren't vegans by definition as a species.

healthy diets are based on knowledge. That's why we have progress.

And we will never be.

There is less consumption of red meat, but turkey, chicken and pork sales are increasing.
