Plant-based and vegan diets are becoming recognized as healthier, more sustainable, and equally (or more!) delicious alternatives to the Standard American Diet. However, veganism doesn’t always equal a healthy lifestyle. Some people get by eating processed plant-based foods, but the healthiest vegans practice habits that really make them thrive. When others see their energy and that vegan glow, they want to have what they’re having! If you want to have what they’re having too, here are some tips to get you started:

1. Eat greens, and lots of them. We all know how important it is to eat green vegetables. They are an excellent source of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, fiber, and even some protein. The healthiest vegans eat ample amounts of these superfoods every day. My favorite ways to get my greens are in a morning green smoothie or green juice. A big massaged kale and arugula salad in the afternoon always hits the spot, and I’ll never tire of collard wraps or steamed broccoli with tahini.

2. Get serious about preparation. Smart vegans take food prep seriously. This means having a well stocked kitchen—ample fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, and whatever else makes you feel your best—so you don’t have to worry about what to eat when hunger sets in. Being prepared can also mean having food with you on-the-go or when traveling. When eating out at a non-vegan restaurant, check in advance to see if the restaurant can serve a healthy vegan option and have a plan in case they can’t (i.e. eating ahead of time or bringing your own food if allowed). That way energy isn’t wasted worrying about food, and you’ll be able to fully enjoy yourself.

3. Stay active. <snip>

I know lots of glowing omnivores, including me. If this is the vegan glow then I pass.

People glow for different reasons. I have vegan friends and they don't glow more than anyone else. There is no such thing as a vegan glow. That's all I wanted to say. Carry on.

Reinforces what I've said before here- veganism is an affectation of well-to-do urbanites. Stay active? Cycling and yoga? Just daily life and earning a living is a workout for me and millions like me and I can get arugula once or twice a month. Likewise tofu and kale. I suppose I could live on beans and rice and corn- millions in Latin America get very little meat protein but they're not as healthy as their ancestors and not even as healthy as the ancestors of the Inuit who got all their vegetables out of the guts of what they killed.

Yea, there are bacon cheeseburgers in the house this weekend.

With onion rings, fries and some mincemeat pie.

Mousemeat pie rocks!

untrue. most latins who eat a western diet have many health problems especially diabetes. Latins and indians who revert back to pre white man diets get healthy again.

Pre-white men they could afford meat. You're agreeing with me.

You need to show credible proof of this.

No proof = false information.

Arbys? you're still agreeing with me. I eat fast food maybe twice a year and remember while I'm sitting on the can why.

I have only been on this earth for 57 years, but I do believe that I have learned a thing or two about diet and health.

Please allow me to share with you just a few nuggets of wisdom.

1. Nobody lives forever.
David Bowie taught me that a number of months ago.

2. There are a fair amount of genetics involved with the question of who will develop diabetes, obesity, OCD, alcoholism, and breast cancer.

3. Moderation is key.
Too much of anything is rarely good for you.
I discovered this in the 1980's with sex,
the 1990's with bourbon whiskey,
and the 2000's with attempting to right wrongs that cannot be righted.

4. Regular cardio and exercise is never bad for you.
Work out, run, swim, surf, go crazy.
Just don't f#%k-up your knees and hip joints by over-doing it.

5. Keep an upbeat, positive attitude, and don't put up with people who attempt to drag drama into your life.
Cut them loose.

6. Life is a song.
Sing it.
Loudly.

7. Learn to offer your advice gently, and then stand back to see who pays attention.
Don't waste your time shoving advice down the throats of those who aren't listening, or who have limited attention spans.
Life is too short to list at windmills.
Cut the stubborn jackasses loose.

8. Avoid cake, donuts, Snickers bars, and cookies.
Sure, they go good with coffee, but eating them rarely works out well in the long run.
And they make your poo's go all soft and cancer-like.
Just say no.

9. Be creative.
Innovate, and don't just go with somebody else's flow.
Write, sculpt, and paint.
Make music.
Inspire others to stimulate those parts of the brain that are rarely tickled.
Challenge yourself to explore the uncomfortable left and right limits of everything, especially those things that your gym coach (15 years ago) told you was never going to amount to anything.
(He was wrong, by the way.)
Break some rules, have fun, give more than you take, and keep your asss out of jail, if at all possible.

and, finally,

10. Tell the people that matter how much you love them.
You never know how long you might have to convey that all-important message.
Nobody lives forever.
David Bowie taught me that much a number of months ago.

Okay, I'm gonna shut up now.
