Meat consumption raises mortality rates, analysis of more than 1. 5 million people finds Death rates higher when red and processed meats are eaten daily, according to reviewers.

no reason to die early. The information is right here in sciencedaily

The authors analyzed six studies that evaluated the effects of meat and vegetarian diets on mortality with a goal of giving primary care physicians evidence-based guidance about whether they should discourage patients from eating meat. Their recommendation: physicians should advise patients to limit animal products when possible and consume more plants than meat.

"This data reinforces what we have known for so long -- your diet has great potential to harm or heal," said Brookshield Laurent, DO, assistant professor of family medicine and clinical sciences at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. "This clinical-based evidence can assist physicians in counseling patients about the important role diet plays, leading to improved preventive care, a key consideration in the osteopathic philosophy of medicine."

Re: Meat consumption raises mortality rates, analysis of more than 1. 5 million peopl

That 2014 study followed more than one million people over 5.5 to 28 years and considered the association of processed meat (such as bacon, sausage, salami, hot dogs and ham), as well as unprocessed red meat (including uncured, unsalted beef, pork, lamb or game)

What other factors did it consider? Was the rest of the diet the same? The problem I have with this is that vegetarians tend to be more health conscious than the average person. So, if these meat eaters were also taking in high amounts of sugar for example, would the study even recognize that?

It's fine with me. I'm sure the drinking and smoking will get me far before the meat will. And damn, I DO love a ribeye steak!

The biggest cause of death is LIFE. And while I'm here, I'm gonna live like I want to and enjoy it. IF you want to drink seaweed shakes, then that's fine. It's stupid, but it's fine.

But I'll have my steak and eat it, too. And if I die at 84 and 90 like my grandfathers did who ate steak and grease and smoked and drank heavily, then you can feel good about yourself when you proclaim, "I told you that you'd DIE!"

Hey, I'm with you here in general, but if the smoking involves cigarettes - consider rethinking that pretty hard.

I've seen too many close to me struck down.

(well, that's my public service message for tonight)

Well, I won't make light of that. It's certainly not good for you.

But my point is, as I'm sure you've seen, that if I'm going to be me and do what I wanna do, then having a juicy steak is the least of my problems.

You will die sooner or later, old age is an incurable disease. I would rather enjoy the time I spend here than eat just veggies and be miserable all the time.

Some people are going to be miserable no matter what. If you're going to drink, smoke and eat badly, this thread and this section of the forum are not for you.

Why does MV keep posting the same thread? Don't we have rules about spamming?

Some vegetarians and vegans are particularly health conscious, but lots of adults that choose to forego meat do not educate themselves on a proper meat-free diet. You simply cannot just remove meat from your diet, you need to replace it with protein forms that provide the same essential vitamins and minerals that meat provides. I've heard many new vegans say they expected to drop pounds only to find that they're actually gaining weight because they're shoveling in plate after plate of pasta and high-carb, low-nutrition foods. I blame it on marketing and proproganda touting how "healthy" a diet free of animals products is.

It's similar to when the organic-craze began. I was at a park when my kids were very young and they started playing with another set of siblings. The kids all wanted a snack break so I broke out some grapes and told the other mom that I had plenty to share. She asked if they were organic. When I said no she politely said no thank you and gave them some "organic" cookies instead.

This thread may not be for them, but the food forum in general could be.

There are lots of things people should do to live healthier, not everyone will do it. And no matter what we eat, we're all going to die. So yes, I think we should be responsible in our choices. Certainly cut down on things like red meats, increase fruit and veggie consumption. But I don't think there's a necessity to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Meat in general is very good and can be part of a very healthy diet. I see very little reason to shun it completely, particularly because pork is awesome. Sure, you don't need to eat it every single day, but there's not reason to avoid it 100% of the time either.

Look up the answers to the following:
How many chickens does America process annually and the same question for pounds of pork and beef?

If you are going to eat a balanced diet and are comfortable with your diet, threads that trash meat eaters and blatantly lie about vegan facts should be ignored.

I agree with your entire post. I'm a low-carb person. Organic foods has been a net negative in my opinion. It makes high-carb, high-sugar "ok" because it doesn't have added chemicals.

It is probably a good idea to expect debate when posting in a debate forum. Unless you are just preaching.

In my view, the only mortality rate that is increased by eating tasty animals is the mortality rate of tasty animals.

Re: Meat consumption raises mortality rates, analysis of more than 1. 5 million peopl

So the study looked at processed meat and red meat, neither of which I eat. I doubt the red meat consumption took into account grass fed vs. corn fed.

Of course you're going to have problems if you eat either of those with regularity, especially with the way beef cattle are raised in industrial agriculture.

Grass fed beef actually has omega fatty acids and less organic waste products.

that doesn't make sense. you just said you wanted debates.
