I guess it probably depends on how big a salad you fix but if I'm fixing dinner (entree) size salads I might get 5 or 6 servings out of a normal bottle. If they're just little side salad deals I might get 10. In no scenario do I get 16 like it says on the bottle.

The same question can be asked about a quart of ice cream, a bag of potato chips and boxes of cereal as well as a ton of other stuff I haven't thought of.

It may also have to do with the type of dressing, A think Ranch dressing does not go as far as say a sesame.
I think the cup many restaurants is 3 ounces, so figure a 16 oz bottle would get 5 servings.

Since I've been on my sodium restriction...10 months...I've paid close attention to nutrition information on labels. When calculating measurements, the serving data is correct.

1 bottle = 473 ml
serving size = 30 ml
servings per bottle 16

The actual result is 15.76. Close enough.

The problem you are facing is your preferred serving size. You are putting more than 2 1/2 times the label's serving size on your salad.

That's your choice and I won't gainsay it, but here's how it works out from my point of view keeping my sodium restrictions in mind.

Great Value Low Fat Ranch Dressing

sodium per serving = 280 mg

If I put 2 1/2 servings on my salad I would get 700 mg's of sodium. That's just over a 3rd of my daily allowance. Just for a salad. I've gotten used to 30 ml's of dressing on my salad.

Another alternative...and I've done this frequently...is to make your own salad dressing. It's not hard to do...there are oodles of recipes on the internet...and you control how much you make and what goes into it. I can make a ranch dressing that has 36.6 mg's of sodium per serving and 16 servings. Now I can put 2 1/2 times the serving size on my salad and get 91.5 mg's of sodium. Much easier to deal with.

Well, you've hit on the secret. They lie.

I like the estimates you've used. I do find I'll use less dressing if I mix the greens IN the dressing rather than add the dressing on top. But I think you're pretty much on target.

I'm with you, though. I don't pay tons of attention to sodium but i do look at sugar. I'm well aware that I put more dressing on a salad than is required and I'll often find that I'm damned near having salad soup!

I'll also make my own dressings pretty regularly and, like Maggie says, if I mix the dressing in the salad I do use a lot less than if I just pour it on the salad.

It's been getting easier.

When I started out, I measured and calculated everything. I still do that when cooking...figuring how much sodium in that can of low-salt tomato sauce, etc...to figure out how much sodium is in the meal I just made, but I've gotten good at estimating serving sizes instead of actually measuring out a half-cup of spaghetti sauce, for example.

i log everything i eat, so i have to count it out and measure. my serving sizes are generally close but sometimes slightly more than what's on the package.

That's what I'm talking about!! The ice cream container in the freezer says a serving is 1/2 cup. That's not even funny. It's like 105° out here! 1/2 cup of ice cream isn't going to fix that even if you add fudge, sprinkles, whipped cream and a cherry...and a slice of banana...and a cookie....damn it!!

Nobody expects you to.

Those serving sizes are simply a number that allows them to give you the nutrition data. Without a specified serving size, those other numbers would be meaningless.

Those serving size labels are inaccurate, I would never count on them. I make homemade dressing anyway (EV olive oil, balsamic reduction that I still have from my trip to Italy, oregano and a few more herbs and Im good to go.) to place on my fresh lettuce, tomatoes, black olives and red onion salad.
 
Salad dressing does not go far with me, even as a kid in the 70's I used more than most, and for health reasons people use less now. I would guess that I use about triple the amount the average person does.

I see that a current fad is the market on the box and in ads "ONLY XX CALORIES PER SERVING" but then you look at the serving size and say "Maybe that would be enough for a three year old".

Oh I bought a bunch of bottles when I took a foodie tour in the Emilia Romagna region. Over there they allow them to reduce via fermentation by placing them in open wood barrels- it takes about four years per batch. I was thinking of making my own since the only ingredient is grape must, but I live in the tropics so it probably isnt the right climate for it.
 
Most salad dressings are bad for your health. I always use Asian vinegar and olive oil with my dressings to dilute the amount of dressing. After I add the salad dressing I also add seasonings again to cut down on the amount needed for the salad dressing. A thorough mixing does wonders for the salad.

Salad dressing nicely balances out the overly healthy veggies.

I get a ton of servings out of salad dressing, but that's because I only like a little bit on the greens.
 
The real question is, why do you use manufactured salad dressings to begin with? There are many salad dressings that are easy to make at home, and their freshness beats anything you get from a bottle.

I'm not on a crusade against manufactured foods and what have you, but there are certain foods that just don't work manufactured, and I avoid them like the plague.
