The More Fruit and Vegetables You Eat, the Less Likely You Are to Die

Long term vegetarianism can lead to genetic mutations which raise the risk of heart disease and cancer, scientists have found.

Populations who have had a primarily vegetarian diet for generations were found to be far more likely to carry DNA which makes them susceptible to inflammation.

Scientists in the US believe that the mutation occured to make it easier for vegetarians to absorb essential fatty acids from plants.

But it has the knock-on effect of boosting the production of arachidonic acid, which is linked to inflammatory disease and cancer. When coupled with a diet high in vegetable oils - such as sunflower oil - the mutated gene quickly turns fatty acids into dangerous arachidonic acid.

Long term vegetarian diet changes human DNA raising risk of cancer and heart disease

I am not doing any changes until/unless the science is settled.

I wasn't referring to you personally. I did a century (100 mile bike ride) on a bike today, I am glad you are more fit than I am. We can eat smarter than our ancestors who were just trying to live long enough to reproduce.

Smarter does not mean No Meat, you know that, right. Cool, have not done one of those rides in ages, too busy these days working on the property, amazing the benefits of living in the country can bring, works all the body, especially in the Texas summer..

to some people that means huge portions of fried food or meat.

To others it means smoking tobacco and enjoying it.

to others living a full live means a lot of drinking.

to others, drugs.

to others clean eating, good health, and living a long time and being healthy into old age.

Well, people all have various different ways of choosing how to live their own lives to the fullest.

a low meat diet can be good if it's good quality meat.

Most Americans either eat too much meat, or their quality is terrible

For people really concerned, 2-3 meals of salmon per week will be fine and beneficial. Not to the salmon of course.

right. there are drug addicts and people with diabetes who don't want to be told to stop killing themselves.

but this is a self help forum.

A study of 65,226 men and women indicated the more fruit and vegetables people ate, the less likely they were to die – at any given age.
Risk of death by any cause over the course of the study was reduced by:
14% by eating one to three portions of fruit or veg per day
29% for three to five
36% for five to seven
42% for seven or more (up to around 10 portions a day)
Fresh vegetables had the strongest protective effect, followed by salad and then fruit.

The More Fruit and Vegetables You Eat, the Less Likely You Are to Die

More fruit and vegetables = Good

Drawing conclusions from biased sources = Maybe not so good.

Fight the good fight though.

I dont think you have the evidence that all of this veggie gorging cant be dispensed with by taking a good multi vitamin and stirring some fiber into my OJ in the morning. My Grandma Crozier swore by a good vitamin supplement , Brewers yeast, coffee, and prune juice/bowl of prunes for grandpa....... after that everything in moderation. They both lived well into their 90's.

Not everyone who takes drugs is an addict. There are lots that are casual users. And also not everyone who eats meat is diabetic. They are lots of meat-eating people that eat balanced, healthy diets.

Those things are not mutually exclusive. I've been vegan ~20 years. I'm not a douche about it, and I don't judge people based on their chosen method of making a difference. Life is a demonstration and not everyone has to carry the same sign.

There are primarily 4 reasons to be vegetarian. Among vegetarians, there are people concerned with one or more of the reasons. In my personal order of importance:

1. Ecology
2. Social (animal cruelty and accompanying desensitization)
3. Spiritual
4. Personal health

I did manage to quit smoking recently, so personal health does matter a little to me. I used an e-cig and reduced the nicotine content over the course of 2 years, until I finally didn't need it anymore.

good point, and those are all good reasons to quit eating meat or eat much less of it than the standard american diet.

I think the point of the OP is that eating anything but fruit and vegetables is bad for us.

Eating only fruit and vegetables leads to death from boredom.

Then I am doing fine.

And has the potential of turning once normal people into douches.

On that we do not disagree.

quite the opposite. healthy older people tend not to age as badly and not need the nursing home, or certainly not as soon. You're just another denier, and that's OK, but this is supposed to be a self help forum category.

The More Fruit and Vegetables You Eat, the Less Likely You Are to Die

LOL

You mean if I am to take the title of this thread seriously, a diet with more fruit and vegetables means I could achieve immortality? More time for the bucket list.

Dang, I'm off the local farmers market......:bolt

The More Fruit and Vegetables You Eat, the Less Likely You Are to Die...makes no sense. We all will die, one day, no way around it. Bad headline, but moving on...

Not everyone likes to eat fruits and veggies, but with the right education and some finesse, I think more people could be tempted to include more of the good stuff in their diets.
The problem, as I see it, is that what is good for you is also rather expensive. For those who can hardly afford to feed their families, Ramen noodles and Hamburger Helper will have to do.
Before we can get people to eat healthier, we have to find a way to make good things more affordable.

And has the potential of turning once normal people into douches.

That's true. I might go vegan later on in my life (but I don't know yet), but I'm not gonna be an ass about it.

Lololo! Really? If I eat healthy I'm less likely to die? Ummmmm, hardly.
According to the Bible, people used to live hundreds of years .. .. of course, you're right, they still eventually died.

Nevertheless, there's a product out there called Cellgevity that claims to enhance our glutathion production to the degree that if we take it religiously from our mid-twenties, we'll never rust, meaning we'll never succumb to degenerative diseases like cancer, stroke, and heart attack. And with regard to those fruits and vegetables, products like Juice Plus have long ago proven there's definite value to the OP's claim.

Of course, children with cancer and heart defects suggest that our genetics still trump.

But if the right diet and clean air and all might have been factors in getting perhaps genetically average Noah and Methuselah to a very ripe old age, is it possible we could find ways to mimic those conditions?

Perhaps.

But then where would we put everyone? Most paradise spots worth living in for centuries long ago filled up.

Well now, do you fart in church as well??
