"My Vegan Diet Almost Killed Me!"

But thats different as you had a congenital heart defect. With most people their poor diet slowly hardens their arteries.

I honestly think it depends on the person. For example salt. For a long time we all thought salt was bad and contributed to high blood pressure. Recent research and my cardiologist told me this salt does not affect white people like it does black people. And on my recent full metabolic blood work up where I did start using salt again in a limited amount showed no difference in my sodium. And my sodium count is always on the low end of the normal range.

OTOH my diet is very varied. I do like me some BBQ but I also like sushi. My lunch today was lamb vindaloo.

In conclusion I do not think we can pin point it to one thing. And I guess I'm lucky in one way. I do get a full metabolic work up every six months so if anything is out of wack I have an early warning.

excess salt. not just "salt". in general we can say more plants and less meat is better for your health.

Right but that has been known about salt for decades. The theory is that peoples that originated in hotter climates have adapted to excrete much less sodium from their kidneys due to so much sodium being lost in perspiration. Peoples from colder climates excrete far more sodium from their kidneys due to much less being lost from perspiration. Africans also tend to have higher testosterone levels which leads to higher estradiol levels due to aromatisation of unbound testosterone to estradiol. The higher estradiol levels results in higher electrolyte retention and thus edema. Incidentally this is one of the reasons why obesity typically results in greater salt sensitivity because higher levels of body fat results in higher levels of aromatisation and thus much more estradiol (which is why fat guys end up with man boobs so often).

I have to get a full metabolic panel every 6 months as well. My sodium levels are always in the normal range, but then again its common in the warmer months for me to sweat out 5 to 8 pounds of water on a long run or ride and thus lose several thousand milligrams of sodium.

All this said, the longest lived peoples on earth all eat a largely whole foods plant based diet and are all what we would call "flexitarians". The main thing of course is to eat a whole foods diet that is rich in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and healthy fats, and to limit ones consumption of red meats. Avoiding processed meats entirely is advisable as well as highly processed foods.

There are many other health disorders directly related to vegan diets.

yeah, it's scary I'll bet
