"Meathooked: The History and Science of Our 2.5-Million-Year Obsession with Meat"

7 lessons on anti-ageing from BBC's How To Stay Young - BT

4. Not eating meat is one secret to ageing well.

How to Stay Young
Ellsworth looking pretty good for 100 (BBC/Screenshot)

A study on the population of the town of Loma Linda, California (where vegetarianism is very popular) found that for vegans overall mortality is reduced by a quarter compared to meat eaters and they’re half as likely to get heart disease.

We met 100-year-old Ellsworth Wareham who was a surgeon until the age of 95. He’s been a vegan for 50 years and lives in Loma Linda.

Apparently animal protein stimulates a hormone we all need for growth but as we get older, particularly in middle age, this same hormone speeds up ageing.

You might not have to become a full blown vegan to feel some benefit though, just cutting down the amount of meat we eat can help. And nuts – walnuts especially – can protect us from heart attacks.

wow, in their 40's. must be OK then

You really don't understand body chemistry do you? I guess not.
instead of educating yourself on nutrition and how your body works
you just spout whatever nonsense you have picked up.

there is nothing wrong with eating meat and it is actually quite good for you.
it is a direct source of protein and contains other nutrients including fat
that is needed for your body to function properly.

chicken, beef, fish, all contain high quantities of required nutrients that you can't get out
of vegetables or supplements.

in fact those supplements that you take to make up for the lack of nutrients that you get
are actually more harmful.

The FDA recently looked into some of these and you would be surprised what they found.
very few of the actual vitamin was listed and more of less a ton of filler.

wow. you're horribly ignorant about plant based diets.

nope not at all.
Vegan diets suffer nutrient deficiencies more so b12 that must be accounted for.
nearly all health resources say that these diets lack

B12, calcium, iron and zinc.

those are hugely important nutritional deficiencies that you have to supplement for.
more so b12 as it can only be found in animal products.

Please post about the widespread b12 deficiency epidemic.

There are many vegan foods fortified with B12. They include non-dairy milks, meat substitutes, breakfast cereals, and one type of nutritional yeast. The "Daily Value" for B12 found on food labels is based on 6 µg, which was the RDA in 1968.

Vegetarian Diets: Vegan, Lacto-Vegetarian, Ovo-Vegetarian, and More
I will go with the experts.

also unless you know where it comes from it very well could come from animals etc ...
also the FDA found that many suppliments were not 100% pure.
they contained a ton of fillers.

yeah that huge B12 deficiency epidemic.

LOL

The truth is vegans don't need to worry. They don't need to start taking special supplements or eating nutritional yeast. The biggest untruth feeding this myth is that people have been told the only source of vitamin B12 is through animal-based foods (meat, dairy products, etc.). However, lack of vitamin B12 needn't be a concern, even if a person only eats plant foods. According to Dr. Vivian V. Vetrano, vitamin B12 actually comes from coenzymes, which are already present in bacteria found on the human body (in and around the mouth, for example).

In fact, vitamin B12 deficiency is often, according to Dr. Vetrano, a symptom of a larger problem; that is, it's not caused from a poor diet but rather from deficiency diseases that usually can't be treated simply by having the patient ingest additional vitamin B12. It is often caused by a digestive problem; Dr. Vetrano states that in the case of deficiency the body has a problem absorbing nutrients from food. Vitamin B12 deficiency, rather than being caused by diet, is often caused by Crohn's disease, celiac disease, and other digestive disorders.

Veganism is all about ideology.
A well balanced diet including meat is the healthiest thing to do.
If you want to go vegan feel free to do so but dont pretend you are doing it because it is healthier, the only person you will fool is yourself.

why are you so personally threatened by other people improving their health?

I am not, I want people to eat healthy. Veganism isn't about eating healthy it is about promoting an ideology.
Why are you on a mission to try and get people to stop eating meat?

it's about many things. save your body, be ethical, save the environment. all of this vs some doofus eating a big greasy burger and killing himself.

Eating meat is eating well and saving your body.

Veganism is a niche subculture bordering on cult. It's quaint, in the same way card-carrying communists are quaint today, but fairly irrelevant. Perhaps it seems all the rage to milquetoast metrosexuals, living in their provincial gotham bubble, but it's just laughable to most people.

Lobbyists, contributions, subsidies, PR, advertising: Beef is what's for dinner because we're well-conditioned

Excerpted from "Meathooked: The History and Science of Our 2.5-Million-Year Obsession with Meat"
Sleek seems like a good word to describe the offices of the National Chicken Council (NCC) in Washington, D.C. The sleekness begins on the street. The building at 1152 Fifteenth Street, which houses the NCC, is ultramodern, enclosed in glass, with a lavish lobby that echoes my footsteps as I walk in. Up on the fourth floor, I’m greeted by NCC’s senior vice president Bill Roenigk—a jovial man who looks exactly like a “Bill.” Roenigk leads me into a conference room where we sit at a large, oval table.

Men are nothing more than advanced apes and our closest cousins chimps, hunt and eat meat and they digestive system, like ours, is meant to handle meat. Don't want to eat meat fine by me, life is full of choices, personally I find it strange that someone spends so much time harping on the "evils of meat".

Veganism doesn't improve one's health. At base, it can be extremely unhealthy if one is not careful with the types of foods they are eating. A vegan diet to be healthy needs to be widely varied and researched. No single diet type is innately "healthy" since many can be taken to extremes where it's not.

Balance and regular exercise are the keys. Meat is part of a well balanced diet.

never met a veggie in good physical condition, who didnt eat fish. fish is meat, so your entire movement is based on twisted nonfacts.
