Dining out: Do you send food back to the kitchen?

Do you send food back to the kitchen?

Rarely. I agree, send it back at your own peril. Feedback is one thing, sending it back is another.

Last I sent back was clearly under cooked fish. We showed them, they finished cooking it, but even that worried me.
I've asked for a check early due to terrible service.
Had a giant moth in a salad once, it was white and plump (Macaroni Grill, Italian) That one ruined our appetite, we left, they gave us a card for a free dessert and took the salad off. Not much they could do really, we'd never go back regardless.

Rare stuff though. I agree, if its bad, don't eat there.

Ive only done it once. It was a very rare occasion in DC. My burger was literally cold and I usually get my burgers either medium or medium well

I have sent food back a few times and done it gladly... if I am paying then I demand good service and product.

A friend, not a great/close friend, of my wife's is so bad about sending food and even drinks back that we simply avoid going out to eat with her and her husband. He's a great guy and never sends anything back and doesn't seem to be bothered by his wife's behavior. But after 3 separate experiences my wife and I agreed that we wouldn't do it again.

It gets to be embarrassing, but even more it becomes the focus of the meal. Three of us are fine with our meals and then she sends hers back, sometimes twice. At that point three of us either eat or wait for her entree to be re-served at which point she has a warm meal and ours is cold. If we eat ours when it is served we then finish when she is just starting - and again we have to discuss why her food was sent back. It doesn't make for a fun evening in a nice restaurant.

There is no telling how much spit and snot and pubic hair that woman has been served.

If the food is poorly cooked, I'll send it back. If it wasn't what I expected but was what was on the menu I'll do my best to eat it. But, generally, I don't get bad food. If I do send it back, I'm not rude about it. I just ask politely for what I originally wanted and I've never had a problem with the second round.

Side question: If you are less-than-satisfied with your meal, and are asked "How was everything?" as you leave, what do you say? Are you honest and say so? Or, do you say "Everything was fine." and go on your way?

I will generally say something but it depends on if I think that it will be actually heard and something done about it... Most managers are receptive people and want to do the right thing.

That's one thing I am adamant about... I will not allow my food to get cold waiting for someone else. On the flip side, I insist others eat their food if I'm waiting for mine.

Hell, you don't even have to have an issue, there are people behind the kitchen door who will mess with food just on general principles. Maybe they are pissed at the head chef, maybe their significant other got on their nerves, maybe they are just bored. Sending food back gives them an opportunity to take it out on someone.

Oh, there are those people, too, absolutely, but there's not much you can do about that other than never dine out at all. I know some people who almost never dine out precisely because of that. It's always in my mind, but I won't allow myself to live in that much fear.

Rad... I was gonna say the same thing. I worked in fine dining for a long time and there were a couple of assholes that did that but they are weeded out pretty quickly. Top servers RARELY do that type of thing. Olive Garden? Another story...

I agree. I mean it does happen that something is inedible, but not often. I insist others go ahead and eat. With my wife's friend it's almost entertainment to her. I think she enjoys being the center of attention for the night. In fact if I could somehow have gotten away with it I would have dicked her entree on one occasion. On that night I never offered to wait until she was re-served I went ahead and began eating, as did my wife.

OMG I just read your pubic post to my wife and she IMMEDIATELY recognized a relative of ours and our similar experience...and both of us are still laughing ten minutes later.
Yeah, our relative has probably gotten to know a few server's nether regions intimately because she sends stuff back all the time at our regular hangouts.
We're both quite sure she's on someone's "sh!te-list".

I know, right? After being re-served I kept waiting for her to say, "Maybe it's just me but this chicken kiev tastes a little bit like dick."

Your relative and my wife's friend could be the same woman, you think?

Is she four feet eleven, seventy pounds dripping wet and does she remind you of a miniature Marcia Brady?
Does she go out to dinner and then refuse to eat if the food gets to the table after 7:30?
(Our Marcia claims she isn't anorexic but she is, and "eating after 7:30 PM is VERBOTEN.")
Does she live in Midlothian Texas?
To be fair, she's a nice lady, she just has issues about food is all.

Damn closer than you'd think as far as the physical description goes, but alas it is a different lady. Now we know there are at least two little women out there sending food back with a vengeance.

Nope, I do not send it back. But I vote with my wallet, I will never go back to that restaurant.

Many, many years ago I ordered a Baked Ziti at Olive Garden. It's a simple dish, quick and easy to make. They served it cold in the middle, obviously it was just a frozen TV like dinner that they zapped in a Microwave, but they didn't zap enough.

I've never been back to an Olive Garden.

I tried Olive Garden once in my life. There's way too many great Italian restaurants here to go to Olive Garden.

Oh yeah, here too. Not just Italian, many great mom and pop Mexican, Chinese, Greek, etc. So I seldom go to any chain/franchise restaurant. But sometimes you have to. If we're in a mall and want something to eat, there's only franchise restaurants. Highway rest stops are the same.

I try to give my business to the mom and pop stores and restaurants whenever I can. Especially restaurants because the food is 100x better anyway.

The chain restaurants food is usually crap.

If you are eating at a fast food dump like Denny's where the chefs are ex-cons don't send it back but if you are at a place with a real chef then by all means send it back.
